Swimming Through Troubled Waters
One of the most remarkable performers at the US Paralympic Trials wasn’t even eligible for a spot on Team USA. Mohammad Abbas Karimi, a bilateral arm amputee from Afghanistan, earned a spot on the International Refugee Paralympic Team as a swimmer. “When you are born disabled in Afghanistan, you are considered hopeless,” says Karimi, who now lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He’s now a beacon of hope for the world’s 82 million refugees. MORE
