Summer 2021

Summer is in full swing! Hopefully you all are enjoying  time spent with family and friends as it finally starting to feel like the light at end of the tunnel is  here. This is good news for all of us, including the children we serve, is they can now more freely participate in camps and other activities.  Along those lines, please remember that OCA does have a Donations Fund that can be accessed to purchase items and experiences for you child clients.  Many children have attended summer camp, participated on sports teams or joined their foster families on vacation with money from this fund. Just send me an email request if your client has any needs or wants we can assist with.

Even as we enjoy the summer, we can't forget that school is right around the corner for our clients.  Many have struggled mentally, emotionally, and academically this past year and may be feeling anxious about what this school year brings.  Think ahead to how you can support your child client and consider scheduling a team meeting to plan ahead for overcoming any potential barriers or pitfalls your client may face as school opens up.  Also consider attending one of our most popular OCA trainings on Education to be held on November 18th, when former Deputy Child Advocate, Eliza Hirst, and Alex Corbin of McAndrews Law Office, present on navigating educational issues for children and youth experiencing foster care.   Also, on August 19th at 12noon, OCA is hosting a virtual training on Immigration Issues presented by immigration expert, Laura Graham, Esq. from Community Legal Aide Services Inc. (CLASI).  Immigration law is an ever-evolving field and Laura will help inform us about the changes and how our clients may be affected. To register for either of these training please click here. You don't want to miss this information!

Finally, please remember that I am here to support and assist you, so please reach out to me via email (Kelly.Ensslin@delaware.gov) if you have any specific questions or just want to set up a phone call to discuss your client's case.

Former Deputy Child Advocate, and current OCA volunteer, Eliza Hirst, Esq., wrote a great article for the American Bar Association Children's Rights Litigation Section entitled "The Art of Listening Effectively."  I highly encourage all Child Attorneys to read this article.  I guarantee you will learn some tips on how to best communicate with your child clients.
