This week's Wisdom Café Wednesday is all about coaching! Coaching is an empowering tool that can support your growth both personally and professionally. Whether you are a coach or coachee, there are many different ways to access coaching across campus. Today's newsletter covers coaching-related resources and opportunities for staff!

People & Organization Development is thrilled to again be opening the application process for the Berkeley People Management: Executive Coaching Program, cohorts #3 and #4. The application process for these two cohorts is open now through September 1, 2021.

At a high level, the program includes:
  • A cohort experience in which you will build community and learn alongside 26 other UC Berkeley managers and supervisors
  • A confidential 360 leadership development assessment through Korn Ferry and coaching from UC Berkeley consultants certified on the Korn Ferry model
  • Six months of unlimited executive coaching through BetterUp, including access to diversity & inclusion, nutrition, sleep, communication, and work-life balance coaching

Growing as a Coach Workshop

August 11th | 9 am - 4:30 pm | Remote via Zoom | Register here
It's not too late to register for BPM 206: Growing as a Coach on August 11th! This course provides the fundamental tools and techniques to coach others and give effective feedback to enable employees to do their best work and develop themselves for the future.

Learning Objectives: By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to

  • build an environment of trust as the foundation for effective coaching and feedback
  • give meaningful, action-oriented feedback that drives performance
  • listen effectively and ask questions to understand employees’ perspectives, and
  • use a four-step framework to have meaningful coaching conversations to enable employees to problem-solve, perform at their best, and develop and grow. 

Who this workshop is intended for: Ideally suited to individuals with current and/or previous people management experience.

Pre-work: In order to register for this workshop, attendees must complete Introduction to Growing as a Coach (BPM206_PRE), which contains the pre-work for the virtual version of Growing as a Coach. This will prepare you to participate fully in the virtual class by introducing the content and laying the foundation for what you will need. This course contains an audio voice over.

Cal Coaching Network

Cal Coaching Network (CCN) is one of UC Berkeley's Communities of Practice for UC Berkeley staff. The mission and purpose of CCN is:
  1. To bring together managers and staff who have an interest in developing their coaching skills to support one another.
  2. To have informational sessions of various areas of coaching.
  3. To provide a safe skills practice opportunity.

Last month, CCN held an excellent community conversation called Storytelling: Personal Experiences & Approaches to Coaching & Coachability. The conversation focused on storytelling, personal experiences, and approaches to coaching and coach-ability.

Upcoming Event


The next CCN event is scheduled for 7/29 10:30-11:45 over Zoom. The event will be a coaching reflection, dialogue, and practice space based on the learning from the June community conversation. You are encouraged to watch the June Community Conversation if you are interested in attending. If you can't, that's okay! There is no requirement to watch the video to come to the July session.
