It’s here! Our new reportwith partner Assemblée de la francophonie de l’Ontario (AFO) has the latest data from our province-wide survey on the state of the nonprofit sector one year after the pandemic began.
Nearly 3,000 organizations from across the province responded to the survey. Thank you to all respondents, as well as our partners for sharing the survey! The data affirms that the sector is resilient in the face of challenging times and has been able to adapt in order to serve their communities. The survey results also help illuminate a path forward with policy and supports that will meet the needs of our diverse sector.
Key Takeaways
More demand, big revenue loss: Almost two-thirds of nonprofits experienced an increase in demands for programs and services. At the same time, half reported pandemic-related losses in revenue.
Federal and provincial government supports have been fragmented and inadequate, with only a minority of nonprofits supported by government emergency relief measures. Smaller organizations and those without paid staff especially were left to sink or swim.
Data reveals an uneven experience across the sector and regions.
Nonprofits lost a massive number of volunteers during the crisis.
ONN has five policy recommendationsto help the sector rebuild in a just and sustainable way.
The Good News
The nonprofit sector is still standing and organizations have shown their resilience. Ontario nonprofits have tackled the COVID-19 crisis with their characteristic determination and optimism. There are many remarkable stories of what nonprofits have been doing to continue serving communities through the pandemic. Nonprofits contribute $65 billion to Ontario’s GDP, more than the construction, energy and agriculture sectors. They will play a central role in rebuilding and recovery.
