What Obituaries Teach Us

New This Week:
Learning about life through death · Words to live by ·
The grief process · Mindfulness practices
Every life is a story—many of them full to the brim, some of them ended too soon. In a thoughtful opinion piece in the Star Tribune, Twin Cities retiree Raleigh Kaminsky recently reflected on what he’s learned by reading obituaries. “Make each day count,” he said. “Take up a hobby. Volunteer. Hug someone. Tell someone you love them. Be kind. Enjoy your breakfast.”  Read article.
On those days when we get it wrong, let us not forget that tomorrow gives us an opportunity for a fresh start.
Have you ever thought of grief as a process? There is lots of wisdom here. How have you experienced grief? Whatever it looks like for you, know that you’re not alone.
Mindfulness practices can improve our emotional and physical well-being, which helps us live with intention and purpose. Here are a few simple ones to try. Do you have a practice that helps you stay grounded? If so, what is it?

End in Mind takes the universal experience of dying to help you re-imagine what it means to live fully at any stage of life.

Yin and Grief: Meditation Through Movement

Grief is one of the heart’s natural responses to loss—not just of a loved one, but of self, of the earth, of expectations. When we grieve, we allow ourselves to feel the truth of our pain. In this culture, there is a tendency to hide our grief, but meditating on grief allows us to feel, process, and acknowledge our suffering. Join Lakewood Cemetery in Minneapolis from 7:30-8:45 p.m. July 28 to explore ways to process grief and loss through a Yin-inspired meditation. Yin is the practice of holding a posture for a longer period of time, allowing us to slow down, turn inward, and hold space for our own emotional pain and discomfort, focusing on the grief we are carrying in our bodies. No previous experience necessary. Cost is $10 in advance, or $15 at the door.
