Eden Park reviews access after disabled people struggled to see at Six60 concert

Eden Park is reviewing the accessibility of its south stand after disabled people had difficulty seeing a Six60 concert in April, Stuff reports. Lifemark, a group that specialises in building for disabled people, will conduct the “street to seat” audit on Monday and Wednesday. The stadium wants to ensure it is a “universal venue” in time for the three world cup tournaments it will host over the next two years.

Auckland City Hospital takes on life-extending cancer treatment, saves patients traveling to Australia

Dozens of cancer patients will no longer need to travel to Australia for a life-extending treatment as it is now being made available at Auckland City Hospital, NZ Herald reports. On Tuesday morning, Health Minister Andrew Little announced Peptide Receptor Radionuclide Therapy (PRRT) will be used to treat up to 40 patients a year. PRRT is a treatment used to manage symptoms of a certain type of cancer known as neuroendocrine tumours which can be found in most parts of the body.

Covid-19 jabs sent around Auckland after two vaccine centres run dry

More Covid-19 vaccines from the latest shipment from Pfizer were distributed around Auckland on Wednesday, after two vaccination centres in the city ran out of jabs the day before, TVNZ reports. On Tuesday afternoon, the Highbrook and Tāmaki vaccination centres ran out of vaccines forcing people who’d booked appointments to wait in their cars. About 180,000 doses of the Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine arrived in New Zealand on Tuesday.

Two people arrested following spate of bag thefts in Auckland

Police have arrested two men following a spate of bag thefts in east and south Auckland dating back as far as May, Stuff reports. Two men, aged 22 and 24, face numerous charges relating to theft and other dishonesty offences. Investigations remain ongoing with police not ruling out further arrests or more charges being laid. The two men were using stolen vehicles to park in behind their victims in order to steal their belongings, police said. Following police release of a video on social media, they would like to acknowledge the community’s strong reaction to the appeal.

Woman caught taking hundreds of cockles from closed Auckland beach

A woman has been fined after taking hundreds of cockles from an Auckland beach where the gathering of shellfish is banned, TVNZ reports. The woman admitted taking shellfish (namely cockles) and obstructing a fishery officer following the incident at Eastern Beach in November last year. She took the shellfish despite 17 signages at the beach informing people it was closed for the gathering of shellfish.

Western Springs Forest: More native trees and bush cleared than originally planned

Auckland Council has acknowledged that a bigger area of native trees and bushes than originally planned was cleared during the felling of 200 pine trees, Stuff reports. The contentious project saw the towering pines in Western Springs Forest felled in May, to be replaced by 8000 native plants. The native trees to be planted would eventually be better for the environment, sequestering more carbon than the ageing pines they replaced.

'Play gym' trap helps capture seven stoats at pest-free Shakespear Regional Park

Seven stoats have been captured during an outbreak at Auckland’s pest-free Shakespear Regional Park, however it is estimated there could be around four more, Stuff reports. Stoats pose a significant risk to threatened native birds and lizards. The threat is not taken lightly by conservation officials, so much so that an indefinite rāhui is in place over Motutapu Island in the Hauraki Gulf. The sanctuary’s tīeke (North Island saddleback) population has already been “severely impacted” by the stoat outbreak, as revealed in March when only 30 birds were found during a survey which was expected to find about 100.

The battle to build the new Puhinui Station Interchange

The new $69m Puhinui Station Interchange will open in Papatoetoe on 26 July, RNZ reports. The interchange hurdled several challenges including Covid-19 lockdowns and international supply chain issues to make sure it gets completed in time for its unveiling this July. The interchange is expected to provide a vital link between the airport and the rest of the city, and allow people to transfer between services at the new joint bus and train station.

Huge plumes of smoke, sound of explosions: House on fire in Auckland's Titirangi

A house in Auckland's Titirangi broke into fire on Tuesday night, with 20 firefighters and five trucks battling the blaze, NZ Herald reports. Crews were called to the fire on Tinopai Rd about 6.50pm. Police also followed to manage the closure of Tinopai Rd. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries. Peter Millman, who lives near the property, said he heard a number of explosions and saw flames around 20m high and "massive" plumes of smoke. He and his housemates collected their important belongings - including passports and computers - and evacuated, fearing the blaze could spread to their house.

Waiheke marina: Guard apparently kicked in head in video showing extent of tension

A newly-released video appearing to show a Waiheke Island marina construction security guard being kicked in the head highlights the extent of the tension in the Kennedy Point occupation, Stuff reports. Last week, opponents of the marina took over a construction pontoon after a day of escalating violence. The video, from July 7, appeared to show construction crew members pushing protectors into the sea from the platform, and workers and protectors tussling.
