My School Today! Launch Event

June 20, 2021 | 09:00 - 10:00am EDT

The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) invites you to the launch of My School Today!, a call to action to support students, teachers, and local communities to geo-reference their schools and education facilities as part of an effort to develop a timely dataset of school locations in Africa.

SDGs Today of the SDSN is developing a dataset using OpenStreetMap (OSM), WorldPop, and Esri products to provide an accessible product using open source data to share national population counts within various travel distances and times from recorded educational facilities. Our goal is to engage local students, communities, and other actors in the ongoing development of this dataset, and learn how we can support ministries of education and statistical offices to complement official data sources and progress on SDG 4. SDGs Today is  grateful for the support of Esri, the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT), and UNESCO IIEP, and other organizations in this effort.

The event will include keynotes from the Minister of Education of Ghana, Honorable Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and President of SDSN, Dr. Jeffrey Sachs. The Panelists include Mr. Jason Sawle, Global Manager for Schools of Esri; Ms. Monica Nthiga, Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa Hub of Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team; and Ms. Annita Mwagiru, Deputy Project Lead for the SDGs Student Programme of SDSN Youth.
