1. Jim Gill Kids Concert Online
Monday, August 2 - Wednesday, August 4 | YouTube/TopekaLibrary

Friday, August 6 | 3-4:30 p.m. | Marvin Auditorium

Vincent Price is the King of Horror to many film fanatics. Learn more about the icon from his daughter, Victoria Price. She will discuss his life, career and his inspirational philosophy for living.

Victoria wrote Shadow Show and The Fly Papers: The Buzz on Hollywood's Scariest Insect (2000) in addition to several inspirational books. Victoria and Vincent had roles in the movie Edward Scissorhands (1990), which was Vincent Price's last film role.

Keith "The Critic" VanSickle, local film critic and creator of the Slash and Bash Horror/Sci-Fi Film Festival, will host the library event. Vincent Price films will be featured every day at the 2021 Slash and Bash Horror/Sci-Fi Film Festival Aug. 5 - 7 at the Topeka Performing Arts Center. 3. Topeka Jazz Workshop
Sunday, August 15 | 3-5 p.m. | Evergy Plaza, 630 S Kansas Ave

The Topeka Jazz Workshop will entertain us with big band favorites and modern and classic jazz tunes. Don't miss this free, upbeat musical experience downtown.

The ongoing Music for a Sunday Afternoon concert series takes a detour from the library for a special event at Evergy Plaza in downtown Topeka. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets, umbrellas (for shade), snacks and non-alcoholic beverages to enjoy this entertaining event! TJW has been keeping jazz alive in the Capital City for more than 40 years and showcases local musicians and music educators.

4. Top City Reads Together: The River of Doubt

The River of Doubt: Theodore Roosevelt's Darkest Journey by Candice Millard chronicles Roosevelt's 1914 expedition into the heart of the Amazon basin to explore and map the region surrounding a tributary called the River of Doubt. It details the perilous conditions they faced, which included river rapids, flesh eating bacteria and a cannibalistic indigenous tribe. 5. La Comunidad Art Exhibit
September 3 - November 21 | Alice C. Sabatini Gallery

La Comunidad tells the story of the Latino community in Topeka through the visual, performing and literary arts. Topeka has evolved since its founding, see how Latino artists have taken root and blossomed. This exhibit will feature artwork from 11 artists.


La Comunidad cuenta la historia de la comunidad latina en Topeka a través de las artes visuales, escénicas y literarias. Topeka ha evolucionado desde su fundación con artistas latinos arraigando y floreciendo. Esta exposición local se realiza del 3 de septiembre al 21 de noviembre.
 

6. Motherload the Movie & Cargo Bicycles in Topeka
Thursday, September 14 | 5:30-8:30 p.m. | Marvin Auditorium

Motherload is an award-winning documentary that uses the cargo bike as the vehicle for exploring parenthood in this digital age of climate change. Having cycled everywhere until she had twins in 2008, filmmaker Liz Canning felt stifled by the idea of transporting her babies via car when she became a mother. She Googled “family bike” and uncovered a global movement of people replacing cars with cargo bikes: long-frame bicycles designed for carrying heavy loads. Liz set out to learn more and Motherload was born.

At 5:30 p.m. view several local cargo bicycles and the library's book bike. Bike owners will share what it's like riding a cargo bike in Topeka. At 6 p.m. see the movie Motherload (86 min runtime) then stay for Q & A.

7. Teen Writers Workshop featuring YA Author Miranda Asebedo
Saturday, September 18 | 1-2:30 p.m. | Zoom

Teens can sharpen their fiction writing skills with award-winning Young Adult (YA) author Miranda Asebedo! Register for the Zoom link. Asebedo is the author of The Deepest Roots and A Constellation of Roses, two popular YA novels published by Harper Collins. She is an experienced workshop facilitator for teen writers and she was a teacher before her writing career. Asebeo is also connected to a network of other successful writers for young adults.

8.Harpists for Peace
Sunday, September 19 | 3-5 p.m. | Marvin Auditorium

Library staffer and harpist Jim Mosher and his friends will play their harps to help create a day of peace. Harpists for Peace is an international organization that believes world peace is a possibility. The idea began more than 10 years ago and has blossomed. This event is part of the library's Music for a Sunday Afternoon series.

9. BLOCK Fest

Friday, October 15 | 9:30-11:30 a.m. | Marvin Auditorium

Experience block fun with your child (8 months - 8 years) while increasing their math and science knowledge. Topeka Public Schools Parents as Teachers will show you how to get the most out of block play with an auditorium full of a wide variety of blocks. Bring the kids in anytime during the event.
 

10. Miranda Asebedo Author Talk
Thursday, October 14 | 7-8 p.m. | Zoom

Award winning young adult author Miranda Asebedo will share her journey as a published author. She'll also answer your questions - submit them early! Email us questions at teenwriters@tscpl.org!

Asebedo is the author of The Deepest Roots and A Constellation of RosesShe was born and raised in rural Kansas with a love of fast cars, open skies and books. Asebedo carried that love of books to college where she got her B.A. and M.A. in English, with an emphasis in Creative Writing and Literature. A Seaton Fellowship recipient, her short fiction has appeared in Kansas Voices, Touchstone and Midway Journal.

11. Fiber Fair
Sunday, October 17 | Noon - 4 p.m. | Marvin Auditorium BC

Explore the world of fiber arts from traditional needle arts to cutting-edge contemporary materials and techniques during demos and hands-on art making with local fiber artists and guilds.

12. Friends Book and Media Sale

Members Only: Friday, October 22 | 5-8 p.m. | Marvin Auditorium
Shop books (including a section for collectibles) sorted by genres, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks and records. The sale on this day is for Friends members only. Memberships are available at the door or in the Chandler Booktique. Bring your own totes, boxes, luggage on wheels, etc.

Shop books (including collectibles) sorted by genres, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks and records. Bring your own totes, boxes, luggage on wheels, etc.

Fill a grocery sack (provided) to the top for just $10. Books, DVDs, CDs, audiobooks and records. 

13. Silents in the Cathedral
Friday, October 29 | 7-10 p.m. | Grace Episcopal Cathedral, 701 SW 8th

Watch the silent film crime thriller The Bells (1926), starring Academy Award winner Lionel Barrymore and horror film legend Boris Karloff. This film is partially based on a poem by Edgar Allen Poe. Silents in the Cathedral has been an annual community event for more than 20 years. An assortment of short films will accompany the feature film.
