UPDATE
Hello City Roots friends!

We'd like to start this month's newsletter with a piece from our comrade & Metro Justice organizer Jay Rowe, titled "A Love Letter to Beechwood";

"Here is a strong contender for my favorite neighborhood in all of Rochester. It’s not just the rich history, or the diversity, or the central location that I love...What else can I add about Beechwood? It’s been home to a Super Bowl champion, an Olympic gold medalist, and (supposedly) the first business franchiser. It’s been a magnet for immigrants and refugees from many corners of the world. And, I think, it’s the combination of these 2 facts that will drive this area into the future; other neighborhoods may be content with the status quo, but Beechwood is always finding ways to improve things, whether it be for themselves or the community."

From our general members to our board members, to our contractors, neighbors, and partners; Beechwood is home for many of us. City Roots Community Land Trust started our organizing efforts in Beechwood 5 years ago, and we continue these efforts today. We all see the beauty that is Beechwood, and that's why we're happy to have this CLT community fight for a more democratic community, permanent affordability in Rochester, and making Beechwood more sustainable & a haven to raise future generations. Will you raise your voice with us?

Be sure to follow us on social media & slack to get involved with our organizing projects happening!

Third Thursday: General Member Meeting
What's up with Goodman Plaza?
Thursday, July 15 from 5:30-7:00 pm

We hold our general meeting on the Third Thursday of every month. This is a great time to catch up on what's been going on with the CLT, other members, and supporters, and to ask questions!

This month is we will be talking about Goodman Plaza, a 14-acre plot of land that touches Beechwood, Homestead Heights, and Marketview Heights which used to be an industrial waste dump. City Roots has been working in a coalition of community groups to get this site redeveloped.

We can't wait to share what we've been working on and invite all of our members to join in this effort!

We're introducing Member Mondays!
Though we may not be meeting in person, we love highlighting our members and all of their amazing talents! Click here to fill out a form with some information, and you can be highlighted on all of our social media any upcoming Monday!
GET INVOLVED
Rochester City Council is having a community meeting Thursday evening (7/15) at 4 pm. At 5 pm, members of the community can speak about the proposed *Int. No. 279 - Amending the Zoning Map by changing the zoning classification of certain Beechwood Neighborhood properties.

City Roots CLT believes that exclusionary zoning in Beechwood has a foundation built on racism, segregation, and an effort to keep folks deemed 'unworthy' out of certain neighborhoods. This type of zoning has no place in Beechwood or Rochester.

If you would like to sign up to speak on this issue, email the below information to Council@CityofRochester.gov before 2:00 on Thursday.
Full Name:
Address (No PO Box):

If you live in/around the plaza, or just care about what happens there, please attend if you can!

The Beechwood Bike Repair Clinic has begun! City Roots CLT is happy to be one of the sponsoring organizations.

Get your bike repaired for free!

We're looking for some more volunteers to help out on Wednesdays from 4-7 pm (no need to commit to every week). No bike repair experience? No problem! We can teach you how to fix a flat tire in no time. And folks can also help by doing things like signing in the 'customers', organizing supplies, or getting the basketball hoop set up.

Stop by, hang out, have fun!

Then, Join Black Girls Do Bike for their twice-weekly Unity Rides this summer!
Join 490 Farmers every Wednesday this summer for their Garden District Farmers Market at 550 Meigs Street! Our Friends from Flower City Noire Collective, Mojo's Micro Farm, & Climate Solutions Accelerator!

Even if you live on CLT land, we want to make it official by filling out a membership form online. This helps us know more about potential members' interests and helps track attendance.
