Two injured after stolen car rampage in Ellerslie, Auckland

A person is seriously injured and a main road was closed after a car theft and police chase in Auckland, Stuff reports. The incident unfolded on Thursday after a BMW X5 was stolen from the Youth Garage dealership in Penrose, an employee confirmed. The keys were stolen from the dealership’s office and the offender jumped in the car, then attempted to run employees over to prevent them from stopping him. The incident occurred near One Tree Hill College, which is closed for the school holidays.

Police arrest marina protesters, dismantle floating occupation at Kennedy Point

Police have dismantled the floating occupation at Waiheke’s Kennedy Point marina site, arresting a number of protectors for trespassing, Stuff reports. The protesters, Protect Pūtiki group, had been camping out on the pontoon in the construction zone for a week. The tents have now been cleared off the pontoon. Police could be seen lining the fence to the breakwater, and standing guard on the pontoon.

New date announced for official dawn raids apology in Auckland

The date for the rescheduled dawn raids apology is August 1, at the Auckland Town Hall, TVNZ reports. Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced in June the Government would formally apologise for the 1970s dawn raids that targeted the Pacific community in New Zealand. The event was originally booked for June 26, but was postponed due to the Wellington Covid scare.

Auckland Diwali 2021: Applications now open for performers and stallholders

The annual Auckland Diwali Festival will be held this year over October 30-31, and the call is out for performers and stallholders, Stuff reports. Last year the popular annual Hindu festival of lights was not held in the city because of Covid restrictions, but an Auckland Unlimited spokesperson said things were expected to be "as normal" this year. Festival goers can experience and celebrate traditional and contemporary Indian culture, energetic dance performances and Indian delicacies - all ending with a spectacular fireworks display on Sunday evening. St John ambulance service stretched to breaking point: Emergency operations centre set up to cope

Ambulance services have been stretched to breaking point over the past week, leading to St John declaring a "level 2 major incident," NZ Herald reports. St John has set up an emergency operations centre in Auckland which opened 4pm on Thursday. The centre will operate from 8.30am to 7.30pm daily, focusing on the pressures in emergency ambulance services and patient transfers in Auckland. Last week saw the highest number of 111 calls and emergency ambulance service incidents since records began.

Assault charge over alleged attack at Auckland bar incident; one man in critical condition

The man charged with assaulting 25-year-old Josh Storer, who was left in critical condition after the alleged attack, has appeared before a registrar at North Shore District Court on Thursday, Stuff reports. The man, 56, was granted interim name suppression; he allegedly attacked Storer during a night out at The Albany bar on Dairy Flat Highway, on July 9. Storer has been in intensive care at an Auckland hospital since the incident.

Covid-19: NZ's first mass vaccination event to be held in Auckland, end of July

New Zealand's first mass Covid-19 vaccination event will be held in south Auckland at the end of July, Stuff reports. According to Covid-19 Response Health Minister Chris Hipkins, the historic event will be held at the Vodafone Events Centre in Manukau, over the weekend of Friday, July 30 to Sunday, August 1. More than 15,000 people are set to be vaccinated over those three days, with another mass vaccination event six weeks later for second doses.

Top earning emergency housing provider owes thousands in wage subsidies, tax

Silverfern Property Services (SPS), which received nearly $15 million to house the homeless, now owes the government tens of thousands of dollars in wage subsidies and tax payments, RNZ reports. The defunct Auckland company went into liquidation in May, after receiving more money than any other emergency housing provider in the country. The Auditor General is investigating MSD's use of private rentals, which is estimated to have seen $38m handed out between November 2017 and June 2020.

Auckland prisoner escape: Te Ariki Poulgrain believed in contact with associates

Te Ariki Poulgrain, who escaped Corrections custody in June is understood to have been in contact with associates across the North Island, Stuff reveals. Poulgrain has links to the notorious Killer Beez gang, and Auckland City police detective senior sergeant Graham Shand believes some people know of Poulgrain’s whereabouts and may be helping him evade police. Auckland Showgrounds events to go ahead after new operator appointed

NZ Exhibition and Events has been appointed as the new operator of Auckland's Showgrounds under a one-year licence, Stuff reports. Events previously scheduled at the iconic Auckland venue are expected to go ahead with the new development. Meanwhile, with the appointment of its new operator, the venue will no longer be called ASB Showgrounds.
