Faces of Hillsboro
A study in heritage portraits for the community by Douglass Carr Cunningham
Hillsboro, Texas - July 2021 - Portrait Photography is almost ‘like a box of chocolates.’ The opportunity for a great portrait, like all photography, may be random, but a good photographer should have an idea what he/she will get, if the time is taken to plan a bit.
The Faces of Hillsboro Project takes a slightly different approach, although I have planned a bit.
- For a casual portrait session, I photograph in a 1914-vintage building on the Hillsboro town square, using (my gosh) old-fashioned black and white film.
- I ask my friends to wear casual clothing befitting their personality (wear what you wish).
- All photos are natural light, simple poses, with little retouching to be done later.
- I am looking to reveal your character and inner beauty. Everybody has both.
- Remember, old-fashioned black and white film, which takes time to process and view. The mystery of photography remains - no peeking before it is done.
The goal of The Faces of Hillsboro is to help bring us more closely together through the arts - my art. I was a Navy photojournalist for 20 years, but I have changed my focus (pun intended). My experience also includes weddings, sports and fine arts. I now teach at Hill College as part of Hill College Continuing Education, specializing in novice digital photography and the more advanced.
Being in Hillsboro has given me the opportunity to participate, as a citizen. I re-furbished the Hillsboro High School photo darkroom and supplied it with $20K worth of equipment. I successfully gathered a number of 35mm cameras from the community for the students to use. Mr. Kyle Bodecker and I will begin film instruction in the fall; looking forward to that.
