Ready for summer!
It has been a rollercoaster year, but we have arrived at the last day of the school year and the last Parent Update before the summer break.
In this update, you will find the holiday schedule for the next school year and a contribution from our Group 7 teacher Sara Moroney about the fabulous PYP 7 exhibition. We have collected summer reading tips and an update about the Eco Team. Additionally, there is a nice video of an interview between Mr Mos en one of our students, Temelko and a contribution about the Impact Sessions by Outward Bound.

Farewell from the Director Secondary
Dear friends of ISD
Reflecting on my farewell, I realize again that ISD is a community of friendships and partnerships, a community where international mindedness comes to live and that cares for everyone within it.
Since we started the school in 2019, I’ve learned a lot from working for and with wonderful students. With their variety of backgrounds, cultures, capabilities and characters, while supported by great educators, our students are the biggest strength of ISD.
I step down in the confidence that ISD as a whole, will further develop from strength to strength and thus, over time, become a reference school for learning and international education in the Netherlands.
While handing over the leadership of ISD Secondary in the safe hands of Mrs. Minke Veeneklaas, I thank you for your commitment to the school.
And, on a personal note, it’s been a privilege to serve this fabulous school. I will miss it!

Congratulations to the PYP7 students for an outstanding Exhibition. Students showcased all the elements of PYP learning through their in-depth inquiries.
During their inquiries students worked in small groups to engage in six-week independent research project on chosen topics. They chose a wide range of topics: animation, virtual reality, ocean pollution, rivers of the Netherlands, electric cars, football, the performing arts, ADHD and anxiety, Vermeer, pets, and electricity . Students created attractive display boards to display their learning.
Students researched through the secondary sources of books, videos, and websites. Then they took agency by reaching out to the wider community for information, through Zoom interviews, and visits to The Green Village, The Vermeer Centrum, Euro Cup football game, and an e-car racing club, to name a few. Each session students planned their research, set daily goals and worked together to achieve their goals and ended the session with a reflection.
Students took action by sharing their learning with the ISD community. During the day, they shared their inquiries with all the children at ISD. As communicators, they needed to engage young visitors and teach about their inquiries. Students created many interactive activities for their visitors, including games, a painting studio, fidget toys, animations, videos and a musical composition to play on the piano.
Families were invited to a special evening session. Students had an opportunity to discuss their topics in depth and answer a lot of questions. The evening closed with a graduation ceremony, where each child received a certificate. A celebratory cake and other treats topped off the evening.
With the summer vacations starting, we would like to encourage our students to take some time to continue with their reading during the holidays.
Here are a few tips to encourage summer reading:
Visit the local library. Most libraries have an English section.
You can take books on road trips and vacations
You can find a new book series with your child so he or she is excited about reading multiple books
Make reading a part of your child's daily schedule
If your child needs new books to read you can purchase them online from bol.com or amazon.nl. These websites have a great collection of English books for children. You can also consider swapping books with friends in your child's class.
When the children return to school, we will host a few sessions in the library, so children can share their stories, drawings, or their thoughts about the books they have read over the summertime. We have a wish list in the library and children can put in their book recommendations too.

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: The Little Prince “The Little Prince is a really good book because in this book there are some words which we don’t use right now but they were used in the past. I also like this book because it is adventurous.”

To all our bilingual families...
To all our bilingual families, The summer holiday is coming. First and foremost, it’s a time to relax and enjoy your well-deserved break to visit family and friends. Secondly, it also allows you time to spend with your own family. For most children six weeks off from school will mean little or no English exposure. I am asking you not to worry about that!
Speaking and reading in your home language is also very important for your child’s language development and personal identity. Also, language proficiency is strongly linked to an ability to speak or perform in a learned language which mostly is the home language. This holiday is an excellent time to use that language. It is extremely important for your child’s overall language development. However, there is one thing that is even more important. Can you guess? The most important thing of all is that you have fun together!
If you want to practise, use English in relaxed and fun ways. Read lots of English books, watch lovely films in English, or use your knowledge of English trying to connect to other people while you are travelling the globe. Enjoy your summer holiday!
EcoTeam: working towards silver

The eco-team had a wonderful year.
We are really thankful to our school community that participated in the different Eco-Team activities and a special thanks to Henry Varga and Marta Neale for sharing their time and knowledge to make our eco-team stronger.
The Eco-Team at ISD started just over a year ago and we are proud of what we have accomplished so far. Early 2020, our Primary students have taken the first steps to obtaining ‘The Green Flag’ and we have been awarded with the bronze certificate. At the moment we are hard working towards our silver certification.
The Eco-team is in the driver seat of the process of becoming a sustainable school. The Eco-team is a whole school project and we have students, parents and teachers collaborating in fun activities to engage our future generations in living more sustainably.

On 12 and 13 July, ISD Secondary students took over BBQ field at the Delftse Hout for a 2-day 'Impact Sessions Event' organised by Outward Bound Netherlands.
"What are your character strengths, what are you capable of, what is your role within a team and how can you contribute to teamwork?" Getting more insight and confidence about your specific strengths, stood at the centre of two very inspiring and fun days together with all ISD Secondary students. From identifying your character strengths, to putting them into practice within different situations and circumstances, students enjoyed various activities led by teachers and Outward Bound coaches. We saw students: trimming trees, tightrope walking, working together in a water maze and playing tarp volleyball, among many other activities. The programme ended with a whole school activity in which students had to design and build a large bamboo structure for a flag they had to design as well. The MYP 3 students were in the lead, and could practice their leadership skills by making sure everyone contributed to the project. The end results looked pretty amazing! All in all, a wonderful experience for all of us. We loved to see the fantastic teamwork and team spirit and, even so important, the fun and laughter during these two days!
Outward Bound
Established in 1961, Outward Bound Netherlands provides experiential education and learning in the Netherlands. Today, there are Outbound Bound centers in more than 30 countries and each year 250,000 people take part in an Outward Bound course somewhere in the world.
Learning goals of the impact sessions
Impact sessions use a learning, action, reflection process, outlining the six elements of wellbeing of the Positive Education Model. Goals of the impact sessions aim to install the following affirmations and beliefs.

I realise we all benefit from this
I realise that I can do much more than I think
I know that there are plenty of solutions that I can discover
I will try to make a contribution every day
ISD Secondary: Phileas Fogg Theater drama workshop
Last week, our students had an amazing drama workshop by the Phileas Fogg theater company. So much fun, laughs, unexpected acting talent and getting out of your comfort zone. All in all: a fantastic day for everyone, which finished with our MYP 1 students performing in "The Little Victorian" show.
