16th Sunday of Ordinary Time
  Liturgical  Color: Green

            centralpresbyterianlogo (3)
Welcome to the church we love! As Terre Haute’s first established congregation, we maintain a 194-year tradition of service to God in our community. We pray you will encounter the Spirit in worship with us.
We ask that you sit as nearly as possible where we have placed bulletins. Family units of any size may certainly sit together.
We ask that if at any moment you begin to feel ill, if possible, you immediately leave the sanctuary.
We offer nursery care for children aged birth through three years. We welcome children of all ages to worship with us throughout the service. For those that desire, Children’s Worship follows the Children’s Lesson.  This is truly a time of age-appropriate worship.
Children’s activity bags are available at the back of the sanctuary.  Guest bags are available.
The ushers are available to help with any questions or needs.

Prayer of the Day

Compassionate God, hear our prayer:
We are like sheep without a shepherd
reaching out for healing and grace.
Teach us by your Spirit of wisdom
and feed us through your holy Word,
so that the weary may find rest,
the strangers may find welcome,
and the sick may be made whole;
through Christ Jesus our peace.

Order of Worship for the Lord’s Day
Gathering

  As we transition into a full in person worship we at this time will sing “conversationally”.  That is, we ask that all sing at a quiet speaking volume.

Prelude                         O How I Love Jesus                         arr. Thyrson

Call to Worship                                  (based on Ephesians 2:11-22)
Please speak all responsive parts aloud but quietly.
     Leader: Christ is our peace.
     People: He has broken down the dividing walls
of hostility.

     Leader: Through Him we have access in one Spirit
to God Almighty.
     People: So then we are no longer strangers, but members of the household of God.
     All: Come, let us worship our Savior!

*Hymn #14                For the Beauty of the Earth                   dix

God calls us to Confession and Forgiveness
*Call to Confession                                       (based of Psalm 53)
     Leader: Fools say in their hearts, “There is no God.” They have all fallen away...there is none
that does good, no, not one.
     People: Have those who work evil no understanding? Why do they not call on God?
     Leader: Let us confess our sins that we might seek forgiveness for our foolishness and evil.
*Confession of Sin
Holy and merciful God,
in your presence we confess our failure
to be what you created us to be.
You alone know how often we have sinned
in wandering from your ways,
in wasting your gifts,
in forgetting your love.
By your loving mercy, help us to live in your light and abide in your ways,
for the sake of Jesus Christ our Savior.

(Pause for silent reflection.)

*Declaration of Forgiveness
     Leader: Anyone who is in Christ is a new creation.
     People: The old life has gone; a new life has begun.
     Leader: Know that you are forgiven and be at peace.
     People: Amen!
*Response                         Gloria Patri                     gloria patri
Glory be to the Father,
and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost;
as it was in the beginning,
is now, and ever shall be,
world without end. Amen, amen.

*The Peace                                                  See John 20:19, 21, 26
(We will pass the peace in place.  You may turn to extend your wishes to those nearby.)
Since God has forgiven us in Christ,
let us forgive one another.
The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.
And also with you.

Prayer for Illumination

Scripture Reading                                                        John 17:20-26
“I ask not only on behalf of these,
but also on behalf of those who will believe
in me through their word,
that they may all be one.
As you, Father, are in me and I am in you,
may they also be in us,
so that the world may believe that you have sent me.
The glory that you have given me I have given them,
so that they may be one, as we are one,
I in them and you in me,
that they may become completely one,
so that the world may know that you have sent me
and have loved them even as you have loved me.
Father, I desire that those also,
whom you have given me,
may be with me where I am, to see my glory,
which you have given me because you loved me
before the foundation of the world.
“Righteous Father, the world does not know you,
but I know you;
and these know that you have sent me.
I made your name known to them,
and I will make it known,
so that the love with which you have loved me
may be in them, and I in them.”

Sermon                    Agape Notes                  Rev. Mike Riggins

*Response
In life and in death we belong to God.
Through the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ,
the love of God,
and the communion of the Holy Spirit,
we trust in the one triune God,
the Holy One of Israel,
whom alone we worship and serve.

God calls us to respond to the Word

Prayers of Intercession

The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our debts,
as we forgive our debtors;
and lead us not into temptation,

For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory, forever.  Amen.
