The cost of stained glass window frames when not maintained

HOW MUCH??!?! The congregation of Historic St. Paul’s in Kitchener, Ontario shares their cautionary tale when faced with a quote in excess of $300,000 to repair poorly-maintained stained glass window frames. Church Properties Chairman and Pastor Emeritus, Rev. Allan Scharlach, writes:

"Please learn from our mistake. Keep a close watch on the outside as well as inside of your buildings (e.g. roofs, eavestroughs, window frames, brick pointing, railings, etc.). A little spent now will mean big future savings. We take good care of the houses we have received as a blessing from God. We need to take the same care with His house."

The Call Process As Gift

Rev. David Haberstock, in his latest column, discusses a common refrain in a calling congregation: “Well, that was a waste of a call.” Haberstock reflects on the blessings that come from the call process, in spite of the understandable frustrations.

COMMUNICATIONS

Communications Director, here! Here's what's going on in LCC's Communications Community on Servant Leader Network... LUTHERAN STOCK PHOTOS 101 [Part 2]!

Trying to highlight something in print for social media or on your website?? Try these tips:

  • If the paper is glossy, play with the angle to avoid glare (See photo one for what NOT to do).
  • Include a person* in the photo—even if it is just a hand! People respond better to photos with real people in them (Fun fact: Did you know that, in general, a photo of a hand holding a mug on social media will get more likes than a photo of that same mug on its own?) People relate better to people than inanimate objects... Who knew!
  • Stage the background by adding some subtle texture and colour. This will add depth to your photo. "Subtle" is the key here—You don't want to go so far as to make the background distract from the focus of your photo.

* Shout out to my mother-in-law for letting me take stock photos of her!

PRAYERS

Prayer: We give thanks to You, heavenly Father, that You rule over and govern all the nations of this world.  In Your mercy bring to a just and peaceful end the violence, discord, and conflict that is currently raging in Cuba, Haiti, and South Africa.  Bring comfort to the injured and the distressed.  Grant that all may live together in unity and peace, and let all hatred and ill-will be at an end.  Bless the proclamation of Your Word of peace in the midst of these turmoils that more and more people may come to know Him who alone is the Prince of Peace and the only source of true harmony and eternal peace; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

LUTHERAN FOUNDATION CANADA

We Are Not Debtors

“So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.” - Romans 8:12

Living “according to the flesh” is to live a life outside of Christ. This type of life is self-serving, pursuing self-interests, usually at the expense of others, and ignoring the presence of God. We might say these are the things a person indulges in to please oneself without thought of God or our neighbour. Our old Adam seeks all things that bring immediate and imminent satisfaction to one’s own self, without regard to the spiritual perspective. Paul describes the consequences of this life as death.

As Christians, we are no longer slaves to the flesh. We owe the flesh, the world, and the devil nothing at all. We are not debtors to these enemies; we are freed by the blood of Christ. We are joyful servants in Christ’s kingdom—servants that He calls friends. We share our Lord’s plans and purposes, and this gives direction and purpose to our lives.

Living “according to the flesh” seems to be the prime motivation of society in general. But our church offers a different message, a life of salvation and peace. Instead of being the product of our human weakness, through Christ we are redeemed each day as we throw off our sinful self and begin anew. Now imagine how wonderful that message can be to others who have never heard it!

The work of your church is not only important, it’s life saving! Lutheran Foundation Canada encourages all LCC members to practice faithful stewardship. Planning to include a charitable gift in your Will provides valuable resources to support your congregation and the church as a whole. To learn more about developing your gift, please visit www.lutheranfoundation.ca for more information, or contact your regional Foundation Gift Coordinator.

When is “old enough” for your children to receive their inheritance? In general, a child must be either 18 or 19 (depending on where in Canada you live), to receive an inheritance. However, it is reasonable to think that any child at that young age may not yet be able to properly handle the assets they receive. As a result, most parents will establish a trust so that their children receive their inheritance at staged intervals. To determine those age intervals, consider the following things:

  1. The maturity of your child
  2. The value of the asset
  3. The longevity of the trust
  4. The ability of the trustee to deliver additional resources as needed for certain expenses

A good exercise might be to think of your own life and how you have handled your inheritance.

To learn more about establishing trusts, please visit www.lutheranfoundation.ca or contact your regional gift coordinator.

The Lord Jesus Shepherds His Church on Earth by the Ministry of the Gospel

The Lord rebukes and removes “the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep” (Jer. 23:1). He gathers the flock, brings them back to the fold, and sets “shepherds over them who will care for them” (Jer. 23:3–4). He raises up the Son of David, the great Good Shepherd, to “reign as king and deal wisely” (Jer. 23:5). He is “our righteousness,” in whom we “dwell securely” (Jer. 23:6). He has compassion on all of us, who were “like sheep without a shepherd” (Mark 6:34). Not only does He teach us many things, but taking the bread, He blesses and breaks and gives it to the disciples “to set before the people” (Mark 6:41). He abundantly provides for His Church on earth, so that everyone is fed and fully satisfied in body and soul. He preaches peace “to you who were far off,” and “by the blood of Christ,” He brings you near (Eph. 2:13, 17). Though you were “separated from Christ” by your sin, “having no hope and without God in the world” (Eph. 2:12), now “you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God” (Eph. 2:19).
