SUCCESS OVERSEAS SHOWS WHAT’S NEEDED IN AUSTRALASIA

Hello <<First Name>>

Last week’s announcement that Canada will end its cruise suspension on November 1 is another big step forward for the global cruise industry, but it leaves Australasia isolated as the only major cruise region in the world not making progress towards resumption.

Like Australia and New Zealand, Canada has taken a very conservative and risk-averse approach to cruising, but they have also worked closely with our industry to develop a detailed plan for recovery. By contrast, the Australian and New Zealand governments have made no progress towards establishing a framework for future cruise operations, despite the availability of comprehensive new health protocols.

In recent weeks we’ve seen clear signs that our Ready, Set, Sail campaign is being heard and local Members of Parliament have begun acknowledging the need to plan a cruising revival. But we still need more reinforcement, so CLIA is urging Australian travel agents and industry supporters to join the latest phase of our campaign and arrange personal meetings with their local MPs.

The aim is to put politicians in front of the people most affected by the cruise suspension and show them the personal impact of our industry’s crisis. Check out our Meet Your MP Toolkit to download resources that will help you get involved and tell politicians your personal story.

Across the Tasman, we’re working with the New Zealand Cruise Association to continue discussions aimed at achieving solutions that are right for New Zealand, and we’ll update you on this wherever we can.

Though several locations in our region are currently in lockdown, we still need urgent action from governments to prepare for the future. Please join us in showing how many thousands of people depend on a successful and responsible resumption of cruising.

Stay Safe,

Joel Katz
Managing Director, CLIA Australasia

COVID-19 UPDATE

Some of the world’s northernmost ports have been joining the cruise revival in recent days, bringing economic opportunities back to communities in remote locations.

This week Scotland joined the UK’s cruising revival, allowing a return of ships to ports around its coast including spectacular isolated islands like the Shetlands. It follows the UK’s initial revival of cruising in May which has until now focussed on destinations within England.
With this month’s revival of cruising in Alaska, the US city of Seattle is now enjoying an economic boost as the home port for Alaskan departures. The Port of Seattle will see 84 round trip voyages to Alaska before the end of October 2021, hosting ships from Royal Caribbean, Celebrity Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, Carnival Cruises and Silversea.
And in Iceland this week, Crystal Cruises introduced its new expedition yacht Crystal Endeavor which set out on its maiden voyage from Reykjavik. The inaugural departure marks the start of a series of five sailings round-trip from Reykjavik to exploring Iceland’s dramatic coast.

Worldwide, almost 600,000 passengers have set sail since July 2020 in countries where carefully controlled cruise operations have resumed.

CLIA and cruise lines continue to lobby for a similar pathway towards resumption in Australia and New Zealand, with strict health protocols supporting domestic-only operations while international borders remain closed.

EVENTS

Unfortunately, next month’s Cruise360 Australasia Conference has been postponed because of the continuing uncertainty around the current covid outbreak in Sydney.

All ticket holders will be contacted directly once we have the new Cruise360 Australasia date confirmed.

CLIA will be hosting a virtual Cruise Forum for members on Friday 27 August, to bring the wider cruise community together and provide important updates for our travel agent community. Session details and registration will be available in coming weeks.

CLIA still plans to recognise a Cruise Champion at the Cruise360 Australasia Conference. Whilst a new date for Cruise360 is still to be confirmed, we will continue to accept nominations for a CLIA travel agent who has embodies CLIA’s mission of educating, advocating and promoting the cruise industry.

To nominate yourself or an industry-peer, please download the form and send your nomination to info-aus@cruising.org.
