This Week's Scripture Verse

2 Timothy 4:9-10
 
Do your best to come to me quickly. Demas has fallen in love with the present world and has deserted me and has gone to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia, and Titus has gone to Dalmatia. Only Luke is with me. Get Mark, and bring him with you. He has been a big help to me in the ministry. I sent Tychicus to Ephesus. When you come, bring along the coat I left with Carpus in Troas. Also bring the scrolls and especially the parchments.
 Alexander, the craftsman who works with metal, has really hurt me. The Lord will pay him back for what he has done. But watch out for him, because he opposes our teaching. No one took my side at my first court hearing. Everyone deserted me. I hope that God doesn’t hold it against them!
 But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength, so that the entire message would be preached through me and so all the nations could hear it. I was also rescued from the lion’s mouth! The Lord will rescue me from every evil action and will save me for his heavenly kingdom.
To him be the glory forever and always.

Mission Opportunity in Holtville, California

 

The Cal-Pac United Methodist Conference has a short-term mission opportunity which might be of interest to individuals and congregations in the Desert Southwest Conference because of its proximity and brevity.  The Cal-Pac Conference has received a FEMA grant to help re-hab the former Holtville UMC for use as an Immigration Welcome Center.  Holtville, California, is located 10 miles east of El Centro, California, and 50 miles west of Yuma, Arizona. 
 
The timeline for this work opportunity is very short. Work will begin on Wednesday, July 21st, and should be complete by Saturday, July 24th.  
 
While the long term goal is to add showers and laundry facilities for the Immigration Welcome Center, workers during this immediate period will clean a building which has been closed for a while but is in generally good condition in preparation for arrival of beds (16 twin bunks!) and chairs. Work will include general cleaning of kitchen, office, and other spaces, sorting, and disposing of unusable items. If the beds arrive during the work time, they will be assembled.    
 
Workers will need to bring air mattresses and bedding.
Meals will be at local businesses. There is a refrigerator available.
