Sustainable Beach Huts - what it means?

The Beach Huts of Cape Town are more than just some decorative structures dotted around our beaches. These huts are Cape Towns most iconic structures. In fact we challenge anyone to identify a structure in Cape Town (or South Africa for that matter) that features as extensively as our colourful little huts.

They are used world-wide in marketing campaigns for the promotion of tourism and travel to Cape Town and South Africa. They make a fundamental impact on the tourism economy, bringing jobs and economic opportunity for everyone.

We realise the true value of these huts and our campaign is not to simply “fix and forget”, but rather one that aims to create a sustainable Beach Hut initiative to repair, maintain and manage the Beach Hut infrastructure into the future. To ensure that they are promoted and feature extensively world wide. And that they are preserved for future generations to use.

Tourism is everybody’s business

If there is one thing that our country realises now, more than ever, is that tourism is everyone’s business. Tourism provides opportunity to everyone, from waiters to farmers, from taxi drivers to cleaners, from accountants to marketers. Nobody is left unaffected by a loss in tourism, and conversely everybody is positively impacted by a growth in tourism.

We are reaching out to everyone to help us to achieve our goals. Our tourism economy is being battered from all corners. We do not want our image as a tourism destination to be dominated by recent events in South Africa. We are more than that.

How can you help?

Everybody can play their part in helping to support the #SaveOurBeachHut campaign. We need funds to fix the Beach Huts and we need to build our support network to keep the Beach Hut campaign going into the future.

Five Huts… and we’ve only just begun!

It’s winter, it’s lock-down, it’s COVID, it’s chaos… despite all these things our teams of dedicated professionals have been hard at work. We are in the final stages of the completing the first bank of 5 huts. The work to date has seen many companies and individuals coming together to make a difference. We have a long way still to go and your contributions can ensure that we get there.

Each stair case is being completely refurbished from scratch. Our master carpenters have been hard at work quite literally rebuilding from the ground up.

The next major redesign will be updating the doors. We are engaging with partners around creating a wooden hinged system to replace the metal ones that are prone to rusting and breaking. Ensuring long term sustainability once again.

BFH de Jager very quickly stepped up to the plate to help us get the ball rolling to manage and co-ordinate the workload that we had undertaken. Sean Scholtz was appointed our project manager to help keep things on track and within budget.
