Dear Ward 3 residents,

The Takoma Park City Council had two public meetings last week -- including one to hear recommendations from the Reimagining Public Safety Task Force. I strongly encourage you to take a look at their report, the additional resources on the task force webpage, and the recording of the meeting.

I want to give a big thank-you to the task force members for their hard work, and I'm committed to taking the next steps in the coming months to begin to adopt needed changes. The Council will be on recess in August, and I expect we will delve more deeply into these changes alongside the new City Manager starting this fall.

The City Council has two more meetings in July before the August recess. This Wednesday's meeting agenda is below. Among other items, we will be discussing the continuation of the Laurel Avenue Streetery, which the Council needs to renew by the end of September in order to continue. I have heard very positive input from residents on this and support continuing the street closure for this purpose. If you have recommendations or thoughts on this, please let me know.

Sincerely,

COVID-19 Updates
The Takoma Park COVID-19 Data Dashboard has been updated with data through July 8, 2021:
  • There were no new cases of COVID-19 reported in Takoma Park in the last week, leaving the city's total at 1,728 since the start of the pandemic.
  • In all of June 2021, 3 total new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Takoma Park. Even if some June cases are reported later, June will likely have the fewest new cases of any month since the start of the pandemic, followed by the 17 cases reported in March 2020.
  • Between July 1 and July 8, 161 new residents received at-least a first-dose of a vaccination and 179 new residents became fully-vaccinated, bringing the city's total residents with at least a first dose to 14,225 (80.5% of all residents) and the total fully vaccinated residents to 12,452 (70.5%).

National Night Out -- August 3
The Takoma Park Police Department will host the annual National Night Out on Tuesday, August 3, from 6-9pm at Piney Branch Elementary School. This event aims to bring the communtiy together to increase awareness in safety and crime prevention, support locally-based businesses and organizations, and strengthen relationships among community members and the local police department. See more information here.

Stormwater Fee Questions
I have heard from a number of residents who have questions or concerns about the changes to the stormwater fee. You should have received a flyer in the mail outlining the specific measurements and anticipated fee for your property. You can also find further information here.

Please review this online map to see your property lines. Some people have found that their property lines appear skewed or may not accurately reflect property boundaries. This map is from Montgomery County and reflects property tax property lines. The important thing to note is that City of Takoma Park staff have reviewed the map to identify locations where property lines indicate a portion of the public right-of-way (sidewalk or street) as part of a property. In those cases, they have already made corrections to your impervious space, as you should not be charged for public property. (Note that City staff cannot change the map, so the lines will still appear to show the right-of-way on your property even if this has been corrected, but if you notice this error, you may want to verify with Public Works to be sure it has been removed.)

In some cases, an inaccuracy with the County records could mean a portion of a neighboring property could appear on your property. This may be important to remedy not just for stormwater reasons but for your property tax assessment. City staff can help you identify if this is an issue, and then you will need to work through the County system to fix the error.

You can request a correction from the City if you think there’s an error that will affect your fee. City staff are reviewing requests for corrections and will make a site visit if needed.

Later this year, the City will also open a process for properties to get credit for work done to capture or filter stormwater. More information is coming on this later this year.
