SHAKEN for TDM Standards Approved

The ATIS Non-IP Call Authentication Task Force has approved two standards and a technical report to enable SHAKEN for TDM.

This is a game changer for boosting SHAKEN adoption. These standards pave the way for widespread usage of SHAKEN to help combat unlawful robocalls.

The approved documents include:

  1. Extending STIR/SHAKEN over TDM (ATIS-1000095)
  2. SHAKEN Out-of-Band PASSporT Transmission Involving TDM Networks (ATIS-1000096)
  3. Technical Report on Alternatives for Caller Authentication for Non-IP Traffic (ATIS-1000097)

SHAKEN currently requires an end-to-end SIP telephone network. It does not work for calls that cross a TDM switch or interconnect along the call path. The new standards provide ways to overcome this limitation.

Benefits

  • The more SHAKEN is used, the more effective it becomes.
  • Subscribers will be more likely to answer signed calls.
  • Enterprises will improve call completion.
  • The new standards place no requirements on service providers that deploy SHAKEN in SIP networks with SIP interconnects.
