2021 Prairie Winds Regatta

Newel Sailing Club hosted their annual Prairie Winds Regatta kicking off the 2021 'Sailing Season’ with a fantastic turn out of sixty boats. Sailors were met with 10-25 knots of wind and sunny/hot conditions over the two day event with many fleets completing 6 races. Fingers crossed, we hope to see many familiar faces, as well as new ones, in the events to come.

DSAA Volunteers Needed

The Disabled Sailing Association of Alberta (DSAA) is up and running once again! Located on the Glenmore Reservoir and only steps away from the Glenmore Sailing School, the DSAA aims to make sailing an inclusive and welcoming sport. Fitted with many Martin 16’s, a handful of Sonars and Access Dinghies, all of which are vessels designed with accessibility and safety in mind, the DSAA are bringing/welcoming many athletes out on the water. Many groups and individuals have booked appointments over the course of the summer, and the small staff are doing their very best to get eager participants on the water, though a problem has come to light… The staff have the fundamentals of sailing and knowledge of the boats themselves, but there is a lack of assistants to get everyone out on the water.

The DSAA are looking for volunteers who are willing to accompany sailors on a short journey around the reservoir. They may captain the ship, or simply be on the boat to ensure the safety of the sailor and provide coaching and guidance, as appropriate. The DSAA Sailing Companions have the option to command a SONAR, Martin 16 or Access Dinghy.

All sailing companions must have their CanSail III (or equivalent) certificate, or similar sufficient experience and a DSAA membership. They, also, must have knowledge of sailing safety procedures and understand how to use their radio system. Their staff are more than happy to introduce or refresh a sailing companion’s knowledge of inclusive sailing technologies like the hoyer, the autohelm and the windlass system, whenever needed.

If you or anyone you know would like to take this opportunity to assist super keen individuals to the joy of sailing, please contact the DSAA at:
