As we are now are entering our 10th week of enjoying our pool this summer, we need to remind everyone just few of the pool's Policies and Regulations.

  • No Glass bottles, dishes, containers, etc are allowed at the Pool. No exceptions! Remember everyone walks around barefoot and we do not want anyone stepping on glass if a glass container breaks.
  • You must wait 1 hour after eating before going into the pools. So far we have had 4 vomiting incidences. Food, heat, and swimming do not mix well together. The issue is when this does happen, we need to immediately close that pool to shock it and it could take up to 2 to 12 hours to clean.
  • When we hear thunder or lightening, the pool CLOSES. Gather your belongings quickly as possible and evacuate the pool immediately. The pool closes for 30 minutes and if the thunder and Lightening pass, then the pool will reopen, if not the pool will stay closed until it passes.
  • Please remember the lifeguards have a job to do and that is to make sure everyone is staying safe. No running on deck, no water guns on deck (can be used in the water only), and most importantly if they are saving a swimmer, you are NOT to interfere with the Guard while they are doing their job. Our guards are trained for our Emergency Action Plan.  We have had 3 saves so far this summer.
  • A child may be admitted to the pool unaccompanied provided the child is at least 10 years old AND has obtained his or her patch (read section 5 of the Policies and Regulations on the website), or if the child is 12 year of age.
  • If the unaccompanied child member wants to bring a guest, the guest must be 12 years of age or older and if child member is under age 18, the maximum guests allowed are 2.
  • The pools take 10 minute breaks each hour. Remember you must be 14 years of age and older to stay in the pool during these breaks, it you are not 14 years of age, you must leave the pool and rest.
  • Please clean up after yourselves, clean the tables and don’t leave any garbage when you leave. Remember this is our pool and we want to keep it clean for everyone to come and enjoy.

Please feel free to reach out to the Board at info@dlsc.net with any questions or concerns. Let’s all enjoy the next 6 weeks of Summer.

Water Aerobics

Please note that there will be no water aerobics on July 26, and on August 4th the session will be at noon instead of 7pm.

Swim and Dive Team

As we head into the final swim and dive meets of the 2021 NVSL season, both the Dunn Loring Swim and Dive teams have had great success and are sitting at the top of their divisions.  The Swim Team won Divisional Relays, and is the only undefeated team in Division 8 with only one meet to go.  Our swimming Dolphins face off against Greenbriar tomorrow morning at home.  Our diving Dolphins are currently in a 3-way tie for 1st place of Division 1 of NVSL dive.  They will face off against Overlee on Tuesday evening, at Overlee.  Check out the recent issues of the Sun Gazette for some press coverage of both teams, including photos.
The swim team will hold a Blue vs. White meet on Monday night at Dunn Loring.  The main pool and baby pool will be closed during that event.  That is the last home meet of the season.

A Personal Note (as the Board's Swim Team Liaison):

As I sit here in awe of how successful our Dunn Loring Swim and Dive Teams have been this season, and I can't help but think of all that went into making this year what it was/is.  The planning for this season began last winter, in January and February, when both our pool and the NVSL as a whole began discussions about what this summer would look like.  As you might recall, that time was when Covid was at a peak in the area and the long-awaited vaccine was still only available to healthcare personnel and those at high risk.  We were hopeful about how things would look for the summer, but had to make plans for many different possibilities as to what the season would look like.  It was an enormous task, and I don't think most people know that without the countless hours, ceaseless commitment, and faith that our lead swim and dive reps put into planning our season it may not have been able to happen.  Alison and Cindy went above and beyond as volunteers to make sure that this summer would be both safe, competitive and fun as possible with the information available at any given point. As the season began, they were joined by our other wonderful swim and dive reps, and they all have been working and adapting as the season moves on.  When you see them on deck, please take a moment to thank them for all they have done.

Similarly, we could not have had this season without our coaching staff.  Again, think back to early 2021... When our coaches submitted their applications for the job, the schools were still closed and most of their parents were working from home.  But these young adults were willing to apply for a job that would mean, for the second summer in a row, working in close contact with hundreds of unvaccinated children.  When there are lifeguard shortages all over the country, our pool is fully staffed by our own homegrown staff, who were willing to step in and do their part of make this a great summer for the kids.  As a parent of one of them, it's been so amazing to see our current batch of coaches grow up from being the youngest on the team, to the leaders and mentors.  When you catch them around the pool, please consider thanking them for their long term and unwavering dedication to the team both as swimmers and coaches.

With risk of forgetting someone in my rather impromptu thankfulness note here, I would also add that my fellow Board members and the pool management team had the vision to see a summer where our swim and dive teams could compete even when it seemed like a longshot; and our parents put their faith in our coaches and team volunteers that we could keep their kids safe and were willing to sign their swimmers and divers up for the team in unprecedented numbers.

I think when our kids look back at the summer they will not think about the pieces we couldn't fit in this summer, but instead they will remember the fun and success the team had as they emerged from a really tough year.  I'm so glad that we were collectively able to make that happen for them.  Thank you all!

Emily
