Welcome to the August 2021 HEICCAM newsletter!

This newsletter presents an update on the HEICCAM network activities and announcements, upcoming events, funding opportunities, and new developments in the area of clean air research.

If you have any new scientific developments, announcements, or recently published papers that you would like to share with the HEICCAM community, please send them to info@heiccam.org

Network Updates and Announcements

HEICCAM Working Group 1 Meeting

The Working Group (WG) 1 of the HEICCAM network, Chemical Environment and Policy, at the outdoor-indoor interface, led by Prof. Ruth Doherty and Prof. David Oram organized its first meeting on 19-20 July 2021. The WG members discussed key research questions to be undertaken by the WG 1, knowledge gaps in the area of indoor and outdoor air quality monitoring and the possible future outcomes of the WG activities.

Your Inputs for the Annual Assembly

Have you attended any online conference which you thought worked well? Do you have any tips on what to avoid for online conferences? If yes, drop us a line at info@heiccam.org. We are now planning our annual assembly and are keen to know what worked for you and what didn't during past meetings.

Call for the Early-Career Researchers to join the HEICCAM network, Deadline: 27 August 2021.

One of the key objectives of the HEICCAM network is to develop an Early Career Researcher (ECR) network and facilitate interactions between early career and established researchers across – but not limited to – air pollution, building design, public health and behavioural science disciplines. In that context, we are reaching out to you to nominate early-career researchers to become a part of HEICCAM and contribute to the network activities.

As an ECR network member, there will be opportunities for the ECRs to co-design and co-organize ECR focussed activities (e.g. leadership training, webinars, and journal clubs), interact with senior researchers and stakeholders within the network, participate in the HEICCAM annual assemblies, ECR meetings and discussions, and contribute to the HEICCAM working group activities. There will also be a dedicated space for the ECRs on our website, newsletters and social media to raise their profiles, highlight their scientific contributions, and make their research/work more visible to the network members and beyond.

We welcome the ECRs from academia, research, industry as well as public sector organizations. To nominate an ECR, email us at info@heiccam.org by 27 August 2021 (Tuesday).

Upcoming Events

Air Pollution Webinar, 25 August 2021, 01:00 PM CEST

Dr Craig Poku is a postdoctoral researcher working at WACL, University of York. He investigates how to apply new and novel analytical techniques to air quality monitoring sites to gain interesting scientific insights. He also regularly accounts for race analysis within environmental sciences, leading him to talk on panels discussing barriers faced by Black scientists and co-leading projects such as Black in Geoscience Week. In this Webinar, EGU will be sitting to talk interview-style with Craig Poku on how air pollution is impacting humans. Register for free here.

Webinar on Understanding Metrics for Indoor and Outdoor Air quality, 22 September, 9:30 AM - 1:00 PM BST

This half-day event, hosted by Breathing City (the Clean Air Fund’s Future Urban Ventilation Network), will showcase the latest research and strategies associated with air quality metrics. Visit Breathing City’s website to register for the event.

Submit an EGU proposal, April 2022

The call for sessions at European Geophysical Union (EGU) is now open. Apply at the EGU website before 6th September 2021.

Opportunities and Funding

CLASP Funding Information Session by SAQN, 28 September 2021

STFC will be launching the next call for the Challenge Led Applied Systems Programme (CLASP) this autumn, and the themes will be Energy and Environment. Our partner network SAQN are offering a short information session to find out more about CLASP, including guidance from STFC on what can be funded and what makes a good application. There will be plenty of time for questions, and optional networking time at the end of the session. Register to attend.

Defra—Recruitment of members of the Air Quality Expert Group (AQEG)

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) is seeking up to seven individuals to serve as members of the Air Quality Expert Group (AQEG) from 9 November 2021. The posts require scientific expertise in an area relevant to air quality and related pollutants. More details regarding the position and application process are provided on the Defra website.

Opportunities for Early-Career Researchers

EUMETSAT Training Course on Dust Aerosol Detection and Modeling, 9-17 November 2021

The Training School and Workshop on Dust Aerosol Detection and Monitoring aims to provide an awareness of state-of-the-art satellite-based, ground-based, and model-based products for aerosol detection and monitoring. Visit the Eumetsat website for the agenda and course details.

Vacancy: Postdoc in Urban Methane Emissions, CSIRO

The Postdoctoral Fellow will work with a team of international leaders in inverse modelling and atmospheric observation. They will utilize the information contained in atmospheric measurements of methane concentrations (and associated tracers) around Melbourne to estimate methane emissions at the urban scale for uncertain sectors such as landfills, waste-water treatment, reticulated gas and wetlands. Visit the CSIRO website to apply. Last date: 31 August 2021.
