What we talked about this week

Yamhill County may have TWO residents on the ballot for Oregon Governor in May 2022... New York Times journalist and author Nicholas Kristof is exploring a run for Governor.   Commissioner Casey Kulla announced his run for Governor several weeks ago and he remains the only official candidate in the race thus far.

The City of Willamina has a vacancy on City Council due to a councilor moving out of town.  The applicant must have lived within city limits for the past 12 months.

Newberg/Dundee School Board continues to make headlines, as the new, conservative majority on the board pushes to remove Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ Pride messaging in classrooms.  The next meeting is August 10th at 7pmSubmit this form to provide public comment during the meeting.  Email the board at boardmembers@newberg.k12.or.us.  School district residents may also consider submitting a formal complaint to ODE here.

Former HD23 Representative Mike Nearman appears likely to plead guilty to charges later this month.

ALL families with children in elementary school in Dayton, McMinnville, Sheridan & WIllamina should expect to receive a debit card in their child's name intended to help cover food costs over the summer. In other districts, families who alraedy were elegible for free lunch will receive the cards, but Dayton, McMinnville, Sheridan & Willamina are considered Community Eligiblity districts.  Learn more here.

Yamhill County has adjusted it's calculation of the vaccination rate in the county -- prior to July we were tracking the percentage of 18+ vaccinated. It has been changed to track against all eligible county residents, 12+.  Of all county residents over the age of 12, currently at 59.4% has received at least one dose, with 55.4% fully vaccinated, suggesting that vaccinations continue (about 3,700 people having received the first of a two-dose vaccine in the past few weeks).  Our test positivity rate, an indicator of the current spread of infection in the county, is climbing along with state levels.
