IT Business Continuity Planning: The Difference Between Disaster Recovery & High Availability

You can have the most powerful servers there are - but that won't matter if they’re not running. That's why having a business continuity plan is important.

Planning out your business continuity can take time, but it could be a significant cost-saver in the long run. In addition, knowing the risks you face and how to deal with them is a big advantage compared to being blindsided and unprepared when your servers start failing.

When it comes to a business continuity plan involving data storage - two terms confuse people: disaster recovery and high availability.

Do you know the difference between the two? Check out this blog will explain the differences between the two and how 45Drives implements these solutions.

Bits & Bytes:

If you’re storing a significant volume of data or have data that you rely on heavily, it might be time to start thinking about keeping your data safe and secure. That's if you haven’t been already!

The easiest way to get started with data protection is by using the 3-2-1 method explained below.
3    Copies of your data: a primary copy + two backups
2    Separate units to store this data
1    Piece of media in a separate location
Learn more about this data protection strategy here.

Pittsburgh Technical College

Pittsburgh Technical College(PTC) has a 45Drives storage solution that keeps faculty and student data safe. With over 1,700 students enrolled in 30 programs spanning business, design, nursing, and information technology - PTC needed a centralized network for their students and faculty to access.

Every night, the school's data gets backed up offsite to a secondary server to ensure availability in case of disaster. Read more about their setup by clicking the button below!

Fun Fact:

Windows Refund Day

February 15th, 1999 - Windows Refund Day.

Have you heard about this day? This was a worldwide day when open source OS users went to Microsoft's offices to return their unused licenses of windows that they were forced to acquire since they were bundled with the machine they bought. The Windows End User License Agreement clearly stated that the agreement can be refused by the end-user and that windows can be returned to the manufacturer.
