And: NSRLP's summer shutdown

Seeking Ontario Self-Reps with Family Cases
Western study still looking for participants

You may remember that we put out a call for participants a few weeks ago on behalf of Dr. Claire Houston (Western University), Dr. Rachel Birnbaum (King’s College, Western University), and Professor Nicholas Bala (Queen’s University), who are conducting a study on the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on family justice in Ontario.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound effect on families and children involved in the family justice system. The pandemic has restricted access to family courts, family lawyers, and services for families. The pandemic has also forced family courts and family justice professionals to adopt new technologies and new methods of practice. This study is intended to better understand the impacts of the pandemic on family justice professionals, family courts, and families and children involved in the family justice system. The study is also intended to make recommendations on how some of the professional and court practices adopted during the pandemic might continue.

Dr. Houston invites you to participate in an interview to discuss your views and experiences with family justice during COVID-19. The interview will take place at your convenience by telephone for about 20 minutes.

A Kid's Eye View of the Pandemic

The final episode of season six of our podcast, Jumping Off the Ivory Tower with Prof Julie Mac, is out now! This season finale was a labour of love! Working with guests ages 4 and up is, well, challenging, for both interviewer (Julie) and production editor (Brauntë). But it was well worth it!

For this episode, Julie talked with Ryann, Quinlan, Ava, Wyatt, Ezzo, and Jennah (occasionally interrupted by younger sister Emma), along with their moms (who we tried to keep out of the conversation…) about whether they could remember before the pandemic (no, or only sort-of), what it’s like to wear a mask all the time, how online schooling can be both fun and frustrating (mostly frustrating), and what it’s like to spend all day every day at home with your parents and siblings. Julie also talked with 12-year-old Uma for a more measured, reflective take on the same questions.

For our outro, we asked Jennifer Muller, an NSRLP Advisory Board member, past podcast guest (in fact, Jennifer kicked off this season, and she was our first ever podcast guest!), and access to justice advocate, to comment on what the kids said about their experience of lockdown and pandemic. Jennifer is also a K-12 schools counsellor for the North Vancouver School Board and has been listening to kids talk about the pandemic and its impact on them for the past 16 months.

We had a lot of fun making this podcast and we hope you enjoy these authentic childrens’ voices telling it like it is!

And that's a wrap on season six! We'll be back in a few months with new episodes, but until then, you can catch up on episodes you may have missed with our season six playlist. Great listening for lazy summer days!

Upcoming NSRLP Summer Shutdown

Regular readers will remember that we always take a "shutdown" for a few weeks each summer, to give us time to recharge and plan for the year ahead, and for some much needed staff vacation time! This year we're shutting down the NSRLP "office" (very much a virtual office these days) from July 30th to August 23rd.

During this period, we will quiet our social media, suspend the newsletter, and we won’t be responding as quickly to messages, so if you contact us during this time, please keep this in mind.
