TCS Times

Nau mai, haere mai ngā whānau o te kura o Tahatai.  A very warm welcome to all our TCS students and their families.

Tēnā Koutou Katoa,
A very warm welcome back after the recent holiday break. We hope you all enjoyed your time as a family, and thank you for having your child/children rested and ready to go for the new school term.

I appreciate your support for Monday's Teacher Only Day. This enabled time for Tahatai staff to learn about a wellness programme designed to create a healthier New Zealand by teaching mind health skills that help children navigate life’s challenges. Pause, Breathe, Smile aligns nicely with our school’s health and wellbeing curriculum. We want to use the programme to develop positive mind health skills that will support young people to be confident, connected, actively involved, life-long learners. Teachers will continue training over the next few weeks with the aim of introducing the strategies and lesson plans later in the term. If you would like to learn more about this programme, click on the following link: Pause Breathe Smile.

Thank you to all those involved in Tuesday's whole school pōwhiri to welcome new staff, students and whānau.  It was wonderful meeting everyone and formally welcoming them as part of our Tahatai community. The most recently enrolled new entrants in particular were so brave and made us all so proud with the way they actively participated. I'd like to acknowledge Ngākohu for taking the time to support the powhiri and representing Ngā Pōtiki.  Since the last school newsletter, we have started two new classrooms. I'd like to welcome Mikayla Carroll and Laura Sedgwick who have now joined the new entrant teaching team here at Tahatai. Mikayla is teaching in Room 5 while Laura is enjoying getting to know our newest enrolments in the Te Aihe room.

At the end of the last term, you should have received your child's most recent written achievement report. The mid-year report aims to provide you with information about your child's personal progress and achievements across the various curriculum subjects. The next stage is for you to meet with your child's teacher to discuss their next learning steps and goals. Please see the seperate section below with information on how to book a conference with your child's teacher.

I'd like to congratulate all those students who were involved with the many different sports tournaments over the holiday break. It is wonderful to hear about the various talents and commitments our children make across a wide range of sporting codes. A special congratulations to Emily who is now a National Gymnastics champion. Emily was selected to represent Bay of Plenty at the NZ Gymnastics Nationals competition in Auckland, competing at Step 6 level. In the apparatus finals, she won gold on the uneven bars and in the overall finals (which include bars, beam, floor and vault), she came first overall making her the top Step 6 gymnast in New Zealand for 2021!  What an amazing achievement Emily!

We also had Zara compete at the Artistic Swimming North Island Championships held at Baywave.  With over 130 competitors taking to the pool during the competition, Zara and her team placed 2nd in the Dolphin Combo.  A great result Zara!
For those hooked on watching our New Zealand athletes competing at the Olympics, I encourage you to keep an eye out for ex-Tahatai student Sam Tanner. Sam is competing in the 1500m track and field event and we wish him every success as he races against the best in the world.  Heats begin on Tuesday 3rd August from 12:00pm.

Ngā mihi

Help Needed for Building Programme
This term, we are running a building programme to allow a selected group of students to experience the building process. This will include everything from gathering student voice about projects to learning simple building skills and techniques. We are looking for parent expertise in the building domain whether it be hands on skills and/or access to materials to help see our projects come to fruition. Our first project has been confirmed as a mud kitchen (otherwise known as an outdoor kitchen) for the junior children of our school. If you have any ideas or suggestions please email Mike Standing at mikes@tahatai.school.nz.

Dear Parents/Caregivers and Whānau

Teacher, Parent/Caregiver and Student Conferences will be held on Wednesday 11th August (2:45-8:00pm) & Thursday 12th August (2:45-6:00pm).  Booking information is shared below.

To Make Your Booking/s:

To make your booking/s the website is www.schoolinterviews.co.nz, click on 'Make a Booking' and enter the event code which is 2p5kx. Please follow the onscreen prompts to make your booking/s. If you do not have internet access, please contact the school office to help you with booking an interview time. Bookings close on Tuesday, 10th August at 12:00pm.  It is expected that you make an interview time to meet with your child’s teacher. Teachers will be in contact by email and/or phone with those yet to make an appointment and will help you book a time to come and meet with them.  If you are unable to meet on either of the days set, or were unable to book a time, please get directly in contact with your child’s classroom teacher by email to make alternative arrangements.

At Tahatai Coast School, we strive to keep our parents/caregivers well informed of the individual progress of their child.  The purpose of these conferences is to clearly inform you how your child is progressing using the assessments, observations and work completed during Terms 1 & 2. It will also be a time when your child will share his/her accomplishments and next steps.

The conferences will continue to be 15 minutes in length, with the first 10 minutes being held just with the teacher and parent/caregiver.  Younger children may of course stay in the classroom in an area that will be set up by the classroom teacher. Older children will be seated just outside the classroom.  The remaining 5 minutes of the conference will be when your child will be involved, sharing his or her accomplishments and next steps with you.

Please note that the new entrants in Te Aihe will not be having conferences at this time.

Policy Feedback - SchoolDocs

Once a term, the SchoolDocs team gathers and collates feedback on policy content, using it to revise and update where appropriate. This means that our school benefits from the collective review of the policy, as other schools may have:

• experiences dealing with issues that our school hasn’t faced yet

• board personnel with particular skills and insights

• different cultures and contexts that provide a more well-rounded view of the policy/procedure.

As parents/caregivers if you wish to be involved in this review:

  1. Visit the website https://tahatai.schooldocs.co.nz/1893.htm

  2. Enter the username (tahatai) and password (coast).
  3. Follow the link to the relevant policy as listed.
  4. Read the policy.
  5. Click the Policy Review button at the top right-hand corner of the page.
  6. Select the reviewer type "Parent".
  7. Enter your name (optional).
  8. Submit your ratings and comments.

This term parents/caregivers are invited to review:

Teacher Only Days 2021

The teachers union negotiated 8 teacher-only days to be taken across three years. These were part of the Ministry of Education's response to support teacher workloads. We are currently in the second year and have selected teacher-only days to either align with public holidays or as a way to support our teachers. Below is the upcoming date we have set for this year:
  • Friday 3rd September
