Ahoy Sailor!

We hope everyone enjoyed the long three-day weekend for the Fourth of July! Now that it's July, we're deep into our summer sailing season. The school is busy seven days a week, with dozens of new young sailors coming to our KidShip sailing camp Monday through Friday and plenty of adult students here for our ASA 101, 103 and 104 classes!

If you're looking to get that non-sailor in your life to experience the joy of being on the water, consider booking one of our TrySails! This fun and informative 2 hour sail is the perfect way to introduce newbies to sailing! Guests will learn some of the basics of sailing and get to steer under the watch of one of our qualified instructors — the perfect way to test out the waters! Available Thursdays through Sundays at 9am, 11:30am and 2pm. For more information, check out our website by clicking here and call the office at 410-267-7205 to book!

See you on the water!

Fair winds,

What's Happening at Annapolis Sailing School

The 2021 season of KidShip started the second week of June! Our campers have been having fun on and off the water with our talented youth instructors! We teach campers ages 5-15 the basics of sailing in a fun, safe way.
Our Edgewater powerboat officially received its name: Rainbow Chaser! Check out that new name decal on the side! Want to learn more about driving a powerboat just like this one? Call us about our Powerboat School!
We hosted our first Dinghy Day of summer 2021! Our adult KeelBoat Club members learned how to right capsized dinghies and how to sail a boat without a keel! Great breeze and tons of fun!
Our KeelBoat club members, staff and friends celebrated the 4th of July by watching fireworks in Annapolis Harbor from the docks! Loved the orange ones to match the heads of the Rainbow sails!
Staff Member of the Month: Ian!
Introducing Staff Member of the Month! Every month, we'll highlight one of our staff members, their awesome contributions to the Sailing School, and what they like to do outside of sailing!
If you're looking for someone who can teach you advanced racing tactics and also whip up just about anything in the kitchen, Ian is your guy! Ian is our brand new KeelBoat Club director, running all of our Monday Night Races and planning new, exciting events for our members. He's a former collegiate sailor and served as the captain of the offshore racing team while he was at St. Mary's College. He's also crewed on plenty of big boats in offshore distance races, calling tactics and working bow on impressive racing yachts. When he's not in the office or on a RIB running races, Ian is most likely to be found cheffing it up in his historic house in downtown Annapolis. Fun fact: he's worked as a chef, manager and cooking instructor in multiple restaurants across the Washington D.C. area!
Sailors with Disabilities Achieve the Impossible
Sailors with disabilities can achieve their dream of sailing in the Atlantic on a 58-foot catamaran named Impossible Dream! The boat, which stopped in Annapolis in early June, is completely wheelchair accessible with ramps to move from bow to stern, lifts inside for easy cabin access, lower ceilings and more accessible navigation. The boat travels up and down the East Coast giving people with disabilities the chance to get out on a boat, a feat often thought of as impossible. To learn more, check out the boat's website at theimpossibledream.org and read a local news story from when the boat docked in Annapolis by clicking here!

 Dolphin Days in the Bay!
When most people think of the Chesapeake Bay, dolphins aren't usually the first thing that comes to mind. However, times are changing and dozens of dolphin sightings have been reported all across the Chesapeake Bay. They've even been seen from Rainbows right here in the Severn River! To keep up with dolphin sightings and to report your own, check out chesapeakedolphinwatch.org or download the Chesapeake Dolphin Watch app! Photo courtesy of Chesapeake Dolphin Watch.
Still Whaley Interested?
Researchers from the University of Maryland Center for Environmental Science and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution recently deployed a buoy 22 miles off the coast of Ocean City, Maryland to monitor the presence of baleen whales and to identify their calls. Check the study website for reports of whale detection by clicking here!
Chesapeake to Tokyo: A Windsurfer's Journey
If you've sailed in the Severn River on a windy day, you've definitely seen windsurfers out cruising and falling as they master sailing and surfing together! Check out this video of Olympic windsurfer Farrah Hall, who started her career in windsurfing near Annapolis on the Chesapeake Bay! Now, she's on her way to Tokyo to compete in the Summer Olympics.
