COVID announcements

The COVID announcements this week leave many of the density and spatial separation requirements in place.

It was announced, however, that masks are not mandatory indoors in offices, schools and settings which are not 'public facing'.

We will thus leave the wearing of masks indoors to the discretion of each member.

Some tutors will be taking holidays in coming weeks and they will inform their classes of the dates they will be absent.

Remember, if you wish to advise your tutor of an absence you can now do so in the Membership System. Simply login and select My Absences and complete the details.

If, however, you wish to withdraw from a course, please send an email to membership@u3ahawthorn.org.au

Thursday afternoon speakers

I am working to organise single session speakers every Thursday afternoon to provide opportunities to be able to enjoy a diversity of speakers and topics.

These will be:
1st Thursday - Environment/earth science topics
2nd Thursday - Health Series, convened by Helen Pickering
3rd Thursday - Science/Engineering/Architecture topics
The first of this series is by Alan McCann - The building of the Alice-Springs Darwin railway.
4th Thursday - Armchair travel, convened by Geoff and Judy McPherson
5th Thursday - Readman Series, convened by Judy Hamann

I am seeking people willing to make presentations in the Environment/earth sciences and Science/engineering/architecture fields. I would also like to hear from people willing to convene these series, i.e. to organise the monthly program of speakers.

If you can help, as a presenter or convenor, contact Carol Lancashire (details below)

Sexual abuse in a culture of silence

Dr Peter Evans

MB, BS (Sydney), FRANZCP

Thursday 29 July 2021, 2pm, Hall

Dr Peter Evans is a former catholic priest and retired psychiatrist who will discuss the psychological and socio-cultural determinants of sexual abuse within Australian society and which takes place in a culture of silence that is both a result and part cause of the abuse itself.

Dr Peter Evans graduated in medicine from Sydney University in 1957. In 1960 he entered the Franciscan Order to study for the priesthood. He was ordained a priest in 1967 and in 1969 commenced postgraduate studies in psychiatry at Saint Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney. In 1973 he was admitted as a fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists.

He left the priesthood in 1976 and became a  consultant psychiatrist at the Priory Hospital in London. In 1978 he returned to Melbourne where he practiced psychiatry for a period of 30 years before his retirement. He is married to Gerda, a registered nurse, and they have four sons. He has recently given evidence before the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse.

New KIOSK check in

For those without a smartphone or unable to use QR codes for contract tracing, Service Victoria has released a Kiosk check in procedure.

There is now a computer provided in the Office Foyer and one inside the main hall.

These display a simple form asking you to type in your name and phone number and to then "check in".

No QR codes are required and it's all done on U3A Hawthorn's equipment.

We hope this will enable all members to comply with the current government mandate that everyone must use an electronic check in to Services Victoria.

If you can use the QR codes then please continue to do so to reduce pressure on the Kiosks.
Seeking female participants for an online survey

The Sexual Health Unit at The University of Melbourne is conducting an online survey to find out what postmenopausal women know about bacterial vaginosis. Bacterial vaginosis is a vaginal condition common in younger women, which can increase the risk of acquiring other health conditions, and can impact quality of life, however it is not well understood in postmenopausal women.

The online survey will take approximately 10 to 15 minutes to complete and is anonymous – no identifying information will be collected.

To complete the survey, please click on this link: http://go.unimelb.edu.au/o9ti
