The Role of Whole Genome Sequencing in the Surveillance of Antimicrobial Resistant Enterococcus spp.: A Scoping Review

Lindsay A. Rogers, Kayla Strong, Susan C. Cork, Tim A. McAllister, Karen Liljebjelke, Rahat Zaheer and Sylvia L.Checkley

Enterococcus spp. have arisen as important nosocomial pathogens and are ubiquitous in the gastrointestinal tracts of animals and the environment. They carry many intrinsic and acquired antimicrobial resistance genes. Because of this, surveillance of Enterococcus spp. has become important with whole genome sequencing emerging as the preferred method for the characterization of enterococci. A scoping review was designed to determine how the use of whole genome sequencing in the surveillance of Enterococcus spp. adds to our knowledge of antimicrobial resistance in Enterococcus spp. Click here to read the full publication in Frontiers in Public Health.

Funding Opportunities

From vaccine passports to prices: Experts answer questions on the summer travel season

Lorian Hardcastle

Fully vaccinated Canadians who take advantage of upcoming changes to international travel rules should be prepared and be patient when embarking on their trips, according to a hospitality expert. University of Calgary assistant law professor Lorian Hardcastle said she didn’t expect any Canadian province to make vaccines mandatory for travel within the country. “There are constitutionally-protected mobility rights, there are also constitutional rights that deal with autonomy to make medical decisions,” said Hardcastle. Calgary experts weigh in on how to keep unvaccinated kids safe this summer

Calgary experts weigh in on how to keep unvaccinated kids safe this summer

Cora Constantinescu, Jim Kellner

As Alberta heads toward re-opening, many parents are left wondering how to protect their unimmunized children throughout the summer months. Vaccines are not yet approved for children under 12, leaving nearly 664,000 Alberta kids with no protection. Dr. Cora Constantinescu, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at Alberta Children's Hospital and assistant professor at the UofC outlined some key steps parents can take to protect their kids as public health measures are removed.

UofC pediatric infectious disease specialist Dr. Jim Kellner also cautioned that while Alberta is entering a better stage of the pandemic, it isn't over. "While it's a promising thing to be moving toward reducing public health measures, it doesn't mean we don't still have to have our guard up for situations that can be of concern." Program educates youth about beef

Program educates youth about beef

Ed Pajor

Concern about a perceived lack of knowledge among young people about beef production has prompted the Canadian Cattlemen’s Foundation to donate $150,000 to the University of Calgary to help launch a national youth program. The national youth program will be created at W.A. Ranches, which is a $44-million commercial cow-calf operation totaling about 19,000 acres near Cochrane, Alta., west of Calgary. It was donated to the university’s Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in 2018 by Wynne Chisholm and her father, Jack Anderson. Ed Pajor, a faculty member at the UofC's veterinary medicine school and director of W.A. Ranches, says the ranch allows the university to conduct unique research and education initiatives at a working cattle operation. Read the full article here
