President’s Report July 2021
Hello everyone,
I had the pleasure of doing the "Trouble in Tune Town" story walk with author and Committee Member Maura Pierlot through Civic on a sunny July Saturday morning. There is an app to download as part of the walk which provides her voice telling the story with sound effects. Or you can simply read the text from the story boards. I recommend this to everyone to do. It is set up until 11 July. If taking small people, one of the stops is at the Merry - Go - Round for extra fun.
Book Week is coming up soon. Please consider coming to the National Library Theatre on Friday 20 August to join in our special local announcement event. It is free to attend and there will be performances by local Primary and Secondary students. It will start at 11.30 am and runs for just under one hour.
Planning is also underway for the next CBCA National Conference which will be held in Canberra in 2022.

For example, this week three videos by Zana Fraillon discussing The Lost Soul Atlas have been uploaded. One of these is a video tutorial on how to make a magic map which would appeal to students (and children on school holidays).

The ACT Government has announced the Shortlist for the
2020 ACT Book of the Year
Entries are now open for the 2021 ACT Book of the Year.
"The ACT Government’s ACT Book of the Year Award aims to support the development of ACT-based writers and to contribute towards a positive writing culture in the ACT. The award recognises quality contemporary literary works by ACT-based authors in the previous calendar year, with prizes of $10,000 for the winner, $2,000 for any highly commended book and $1,000 for each shortlisted book," said Minister Cheyne.

Judging of the 2020 ACT Book of the Year Award, which has typically been announced in December, was delayed due to COVID.

The exhibition is being held at "The Shop Gallery" in Glebe in the week prior to Book Week. For further information, go the the ACLF website or email admin@childrenslaureate.org.au.
If you would like your picture to be part of the show too, then draw, do a painting, a model or even make a puppet of a magpie, take a photo of it and then send it to admin@childrenslaureate.org.au. You can use Andrew Joyner’s brilliant guide “How to Draw a Magpie” if you like.
For past writing ideas and resources go to the Laureate Resources page. This month there is a new poem called "The Library's child'. Keep an eye out for this month's activity which includes writing in Braille.
In the Read with Ursula tab, you will find "The terrible plop" Auslan version. Other videos include "Midnight at the Library", "Too many elephants in this house" and "The little cat".

Mr Tickle turns 50
The Roger Hargreaves book that started it all turns 50 this year. The new special edition also tells you how the series began.
Pictures are brightly coloured and appealing the children of all ages. Discussion topics could include the 1970's - fashion and careers.

New coins from the Mint
The CBCA has entered into a new five-year partnership with the Australian Mint. CBCAs logo will be featured on special coins, minted to celebrate certain landmarks for particular creatives. This year, a coin is being produced to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Animalia by Graeme Base! The coin will be promoted by the Mint during the first few weeks of August, leading up to CBCA Book Week.
Currently there are two Centenary Ginger Meggs coin available - one is silver frosted coin for $130 and the other an uncirculated 'coloured' coin for $30.

The Great Book Swap 
The Great Book Swap is a fantastic way to celebrate reading locally, learn more about Indigenous languages and culture, while raising funds for the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Schools, workplaces, libraries, universities, book clubs, individuals and all kinds of organisations can host a Great Book Swap. The idea is to swap a favourite book in exchange for a gold coin donation.
This year, we are aiming to raise $350,000! By registering to host a Great Book Swap at your school or library, you will be actively helping us gift 35,000 new, carefully chosen books to children in remote communities across the country.

Aspiring Writers Mentorship Program
CBCA NSW Branch is pleased to announce that the Aspiring Writers Mentorship Program is being re-launched in 2021 with sponsorship by Cathie Tasker who will mentor the winner. Fremantle Press will provide 2 runners-up with access to their online writing course plus the text How to be an author by Georgia Richter & Deborah Hunn.
The Aspiring Writers Mentorship Program aims to foster the talent of aspiring writers of children's literature across Australia and is open to all Australian citizens residing in Australia.

Australia Reads - 14 September 2021
Australian Children’s Laureate Ursula Dubosarsky is an Australia Reads Ambassador in 2021. The Australian Reading Hour returns for its tenth year on Tuesday 14 September 2021.
Ursula is thrilled to share her Australia Reads Special Edition book, “The Magnificent Hercules Quick”, illustrated by Andrew Joyner.

Dear Members,
My apologies for the delay in communicating. I am writing to you all from lockdown in NSW and uncertainty
throughout Australia. I have just traversed a moment in time without a functioning computer, then moved to a
house with a glitch with technology access, and now lockdown. My circumstances are a small, miniscule, slice of
life in these times, but it does make you realise how reliant we have become on technology to remain connected
and productive. With this new round of uncertainty you will face challenges with event organising and keeping
connected to members. We can only hope that CBCA Book Week will remain a moment in the near future to jump
up and celebrate. The Board wishes you all well. Please stay in touch with each other and let the Board know if
you would like us to organise a regular ‘virtual-get-together’.
On June 16th the Chair met with the Branch Presidents, which is an important opportunity for us to connect. We
will organise another meeting soon so all directors can continue this two-way sharing. A tangible and important
way to inform the Board of your activities and concerns or congratulations(!), is for each branch to regularly
present to the Board for each monthly meeting a brief report. This report should be provided to us (for now
send to the Chair), the Thursday prior to a board meeting. We are working on a Google calendar that will be
shared with you so that all our meeting dates, and key events are shared (thanks to Suzanne Livett the Director
in the NT).
The Board met on June 21.
Merchandise is continuing to perform well and we encourage one last push by all our members to promote
the value of purchasing merchandise as a tangible way to support our work — celebrating our creatives on the
awards shortlist and raising community engagement through CBCA Book Week. Work is well under way for our
2022 range.
Our Book of the Year Awards 2022 entries are coming in—we are crossing fingers though that the second half of
the year we will have greater momentum. The judges are well under control in terms of work load.
It was a tremendous moment to announce the 2021 Nan Chauncy Award winner as Jan Nicholls, a very deserving
advocate for children’s literature, and a wonderful CBCA colleague who always went way beyond her duties as
President of our West Australian Branch. Leanne Rands and her team of judges had a very challenging job this
year choosing a recipient. Jan will be presented with her Award formally in Adelaide at the Book of the Year
Awards ceremony at Government House.
The Book of the Year Awards announcement from our branch in South Australia is shaping up well. The
announcement video, currently in production, will feature some important South Australians and be on our
national website at noon on Friday August 20, thank you to our SA colleagues and their focus and creativity. There
will be the formal ceremony at Government House also.
Graeme Base will launch the Australian Mint’s special 35th ‘Animalia’ anniversary coin during our Book of the Year
Awards video, and the Mint will be announcing a special competition to run through September. The Mint is an
important new partner for the CBCA and we thank them for their support.
Which brings me to a very important matter discussed at our Board meeting this month; the call out to you
all regarding our announcement in 2022, who would like to host? Make a pitch! We discussed providing the branch who takes up the honour with a new set of constructive instructions and guidelines. Having an online
announcement, for two years, has highlighted the need for the branch to be equipped with support and
direction. We look forward to hearing from you with your expression of interest.
The theme for 2022 will be announced after CBCA Book Week this year, as per tradition, so it may well inspire
you to create a special event for the announcement. Can you please send your EOI to me before our board
meeting on September 13. Jane Moore in SA, our Deputy Chair, would be happy to hear from you should you
have questions.
A reminder that next June 2022 will be our National Conference in Canberra. We will confirm the dates after
our July board meeting. The ACT Branch are confirming details with the Conference organiser. We will notify you
and the community as soon as this date is confirmed.
Finally, at the Board meeting we finalised our thoughts around a new member of staff. We are moving
cautiously due to our financial constraints this year, but we are fine-tuning the call out for a 12 hour a week
contract until 2022, for a National Executive Officer/Company Secretary. We must proceed to organise our
policies and procedures for good governance, legally we require a Company Secretary for reporting, and
providing support to the Board and the two part-time staff is also a high priority. We will circulate this just as
soon as we have the financial assumptions confirmed. It has been a slow process, I acknowledge that, and
thank the staff in the office, Shannon and Anne who are both so effectively carrying out their responsibilities
with huge good will. Please remember to thank them! I also thank you for your understanding and
consideration.
Our next board meeting is on July 19.

The Communications Subcommittee recently launched a new CBCA National Instagram account @cbcaustralia (@cbca was unavailable). This, along with our Facebook and Twitter accounts, will be used to communicate our key announcements and to share interesting and relevant content with our members and followers. Just a reminder to use the hashtag #CBCA2021 when promoting any events.
