Opening Prayer

What is Prayer

A spiritual life without prayer is like the Gospel
without Christ.                               --Reaching Out

To pray ... means to think and live in the presence
of God.                                     --Clowning in Rome

Remembering Our Dear Friend
Barbara Ann Eileen Ferrington ~ 1935 - 2021

Dear Friends,

Below is an obituary for Barbara Ferrington that was provided by her son, Richard Ferrington.
Please keep the family in your prayers and pray for the soul of Barbara as she is now in peace with the Lord.

On May 20th, Barbara Ann Eileen Ferrington passed away peacefully at St Joseph Memorial Hospital in Santa Rosa. Barbara was a resident of Sonoma County and its beautiful wine country surroundings for almost 50 years. She enjoyed spending time with family and friends, and was especially passionate about music and the fine arts. She and her husband were generous supporters of the Green Music Hall, Santa Rosa Symphony, Sonoma County Museum, 6th Street Playhouse and the SRJC Summer Repertory Theatre.

She is survived by her husband Dr. Richard A. Ferrington, her three children Kathleen Ferrington, Leslie Bullard and Richard L Ferrington (spouse Joy) and four grandchildren Megan Finley, Alexandria Ferrington, Lauren Ferrington and Patty Bullard as well as her sister Suzanne Lind (spouse Steve) and brother Richard Boss (spouse Delphine).

She was preceded in death by her parents Eileen and Jack Boss, brother Charles Boss and her son John Thomas Ferrington.
An intimate family service was held on June 26th in the memorial garden at St Patrick's Episcopal Church in Kenwood followed by a celebration of life with her family and friends.

Birthday Celebration Coming Up!!

CONNIE VON LOBEN SELS CELEBRATES
HER  100th  BIRTHDAY

Connie Von Loben Sels will soon join a very exclusive club, the 100 Club, as she celebrates her 100th birthday on July 14th!

Connie and her family are an important part of St. Patrick's history. The land on which the church sits, including Connie's house up the hill, and the Green Acres home, was all part of the property owned by Connie's family. Her father gifted the current church property to St. Patrick's.

We have been fortunate to have Connie as a parishioner for many years and most will recall her soaring soprano voice rise from the choir on Sundays. Connie could hit the high notes with style, well into her 90s.

And who among us can forget the dashing figure Connie cut as the Grand Marshall in the Kenwood 4th of July Parade in 2017, riding in Rich Randolph's vintage car with her grandson and great-grandson, riding behind her vehicle on his Harley-Davidson was her son, Fred Van Loben Sels!
Connie took a fall few months ago and broke her hip. She has recovered, yet needs some extra assistance, and is now living at Green Acres Residential Care Home.

You can write a birthday greeting and mail it to Connie at:

Pop-Up Food Ministry!

Below is Elanor Albon's thankful note and a recap of Tuesday's Pop-Up Food Ministry at St Patrick's Church front parking lot.
Thank you to our Pop-Food Ministry team for all your hard work in serving those in our community!

Dear All,

Thank you to Kathleen, Ned, Carolyn, Kerin, Lauri, REFB rep Arturo and mystery REBF LADY driver whose name is unknown!  Food was given to 39 households/130 individuals.

Distribution was slow, but steady.  We asked for and received enough for 55 families; those who came left with a lot of food!   We volunteers got generously paid in heart-felt smiles and thank-you's!

Eleanor

In other Food Pop-Up Ministry news...

We would like to congratulate & recognize Gordon Freedman who has been a faithful volunteer for years at St Patrick's distribution.  He has an award named for him with Rotary!

Gordon writes in a recent email:

"Last night at the 10th induction of a president of the Rotary Club I started 11 years ago,the club gives an award for the most inspirational Rotarian in my name every year! It was a long and difficult job in creating the club but it turns out be the gift that is still giving.

I am taking a moment to be very proud and  hope mom and dad are aware and kvelling how their son turned out.

Love and peace,

Gordon"

Great Themes of Scripture: New Testament

Acts: Knowledge on Fire
Wednesday, July 7, 2021

In Luke’s Gospel, the Holy Spirit is fully bestowed on Jesus, the beloved Son who acts with God’s power, speaks with God’s authority, and loves with God’s love. Through the gift of the Spirit given to Jesus, God’s justice is announced and demonstrated as Jesus travels from Galilee to Jerusalem, freeing the sick from their illnesses, liberating the enslaved from their sins, and enriching the poor with the good news of the messianic banquet open to all.

In the Acts of the Apostles, also written by Luke, that same Spirit is bestowed on a body of God’s sons and daughters who surrender their own lives to God’s love. Jesus tells his disciples, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit overcomes you, and then you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, and even to the ends of the earth” (Acts 1:8).

The spiritual truth is this: there is a difference between knowledge “on ice” and knowledge “on fire.” For many Christians, their belief is often just knowledge “on ice,” not experiential, firsthand knowledge, which is knowledge “on fire.” Even though we call them both faith, there is a difference between intellectual belief and real trust. There is a difference between talking about transformation and God’s love and stepping out in confidence to live a loving life. Only the second is biblical faith: when our walk matches our talk.

The Spirit teaches us this new walk. When Jesus died, the apostles didn’t have a Spirit-filled faith. Though Jesus’ mother Mary and Mary Magdalene stayed, all but one of the men deserted Jesus on the cross. The apostles were demoralized. They lacked conviction. They had no aim or purpose. But shortly afterwards, they were transformed. Changed from within, they acted, lived, and walked in a new way. These lukewarm followers began to act like people “on fire.” Or as Acts describes them, they are “the people who are turning our whole world upside down” (Acts 17:6).

Brian McLaren writes about the need for the fire of the Spirit today:

In the millennia since Christ walked with us on this Earth, we’ve often tried to box up the “wind” [of the Spirit] in manageable doctrines. We’ve exchanged the fire of the Spirit for the ice of religious pride. We’ve turned the wine back into water, and then let the water go stagnant and lukewarm. We’ve traded the gentle dove of peace for the predatory hawk or eagle of empire. When we have done so, we have ended up with just another religious system, as problematic as any other: too often petty, argumentative, judgmental, cold, hostile, bureaucratic, self-seeking, an enemy of aliveness.

In a world full of big challenges, in a time like ours, we can’t settle for a heavy and fixed religion. We can’t try to contain the Spirit in a box. We need to experience the mighty rushing wind of Pentecost. We need our hearts to be made incandescent by the Spirit’s fire. [1]

Story from Our Community:
On Maundy Thursday, 25 years ago I was left for dead in a ditch. Three young people saw me and went for help. God immediately called me to forgive with Genesis 50:20: “What you meant for evil God has turned into good. God brought me to this position so that I could save the lives of many people.” Later that year I became involved in a program that helps in youth detention centers. I was able to tell how I came to forgive, which helped several young boys. Forgiveness changes things. —Kathleen H.
