Aloha,

Good Energy Update: Tankless Water Heaters

As the COVID-19 pandemic closed the state to visitors last year, some businesses in the hotel and travel industry took advantage of the downtime to make major upgrades to their infrastructure and operations. Halekulani, the 453-room luxury hotel in Waikiki, replaced their old boilers with 32 gas tankless water heaters that will serve multiple areas in the hotel including hot water demands for guest rooms and their in-house laundry service. The new on-demand tankless water heaters are more energy efficient and will provide the hotel with significant energy cost savings over time.

Halekulaniʻs new tankless gas water heaters are manifolded together and grouped in sections to serve various hotel areas. Pictured are Sharon Shigemoto, Hawaiʻi Gas Oʻahu Sales Supervisor, and Sarahlyn Vilora, Halekulani Engineering Plant Maintenance Supervisor.
On the residential front, as of March 3, 2021, the Hawaii State Energy Office is accepting solar water heating variance(s) for new single-family dwellings. Any homeowner considering an application for a variance from the residential solar water heater law should be aware that all five of the following requirements must be met if a gas on-demand tankless water heater is the selected alternative:
  1. Approved (certified) by Underwriters Laboratories, Inc. (UL) or other nationally recognized testing laboratory;
  2. At least one additional gas appliance must be installed in the dwelling;
  3. The gas water heater must provide hot water only as it is needed;
  4. The burden of proof will lie with the applicant to demonstrate that a solar water heater system, regardless of location or circumstance, is not cost effective in the context of a 30-year mortgage term; and
  5. The applicant must be the party who will ultimately pay for the energy cost consumption
For questions about the application process or requirements, email the state Department of Business and Economic Development and Tourism.

Rent and Utility Relief Programs

Across the state, rental and utility relief programs are still available to residents who have had their income negatively impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. However, those in need are strongly encouraged to apply for assistance soon because federal funding may end on September 30.

There are income requirements and household size guidelines for each county and the funds that qualified families receive can be used for paying rent and utility bills including electricity, water and gas. Internet and cable television bills are not covered. For more information or to apply for assistance, see the links below for each respective county:
