July 9, 2021
In the month of April 2021, four million people quit their jobs making it a world record month! In fact, after multiple surveys from different companies, it is reported that over 40% of workers around the world are thinking about changing their current vocations. This phenomenon has now been deemed “The Great Resignation.”

With the pandemic, people have reassessed commutes, income, and value. What is most fascinating is, according to the Department of Labor, the largest population of those quitting are from restaurants and hotels: the service industry.

Anecdotally, people are choosing to spend more time with their children, to be at home for dinner, to have more time for other things, to drive others to medical appointments and not themselves to jobs. Over and over again, after each report of a resignation, there is a story of a greater level of service.

People are not quitting their industry; they are simply serving for a different reward. And that reward and that industry has been the business of the universal Church for quite some time. God has been at the center of the industry, the policies, the ministries, the benefits, the stories, and the people.

Our service, our hospitality as a church matters. Scripturally, it mattered to the one in the ditch; it mattered to the one on the mat being lowered from the roof; it mattered to the one who was dying. Right now, it matters to the one who cannot eat; it matters to the one who needs employment; it matters to the one without shelter.

May your job these next weeks and months be a record-breaking time of providing for another.

Whatever your task, put yourselves into it, as done for the Lord – Colossians 3:23a
