Changes to communication systems for Bishop's parents
From September, two more of our Bishop's Primary campuses will be going fully paperless. Thomas Bewick Campus in Ashington and Grace Darling Campus in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea are both planning to move all of their school to home communications online in a bid to be kinder to the environment.

Parents of pupils at both campuses are advised to watch out for a text message coming through to ask them to complete a form with their preferred contact details for school communications from September onwards.

Also...

A small reminder to all Bishop's Primary School parents that our communication and payment systems will be transitioning to Arbor from September - this will replace Parentmail and SIMS Pay for online payments for things like school meals and educational visits.

We will send further communication on the Arbor parent app and how to register during the summer break, please look out for this information and register your child when prompted.
Year 8 pupil achieves black belt in Shotokan Karate
A pupil from Duke's Secondary School has achieved his black belt in Shotokan karate. Year 8 pupil, Callum Caldwell, is the first in his club (Ashington Shotokan Karate Club) to achieve the black belt in 15 months. He was due to grade for this belt in March 2020 but had to postpone due to covid restrictions.

Callum managed to continue to train throughout lockdown at least twice a week and took part in many Zoom classes, he then trained around Ashington in car parks and fields when he was allowed to train in groups again.

Callum is currently training hard as a black belt and working his way towards competing in the Northern Regions competition in Chesterfield in October. A massive congratulations to Callum on this incredible achievement!

Football fever sweeps Castle School
In light of the terrific result last night for England, Castle School is going to have a non-uniform day on Friday 9th July.

We would like the children to come to school wearing Red, White and Blue to celebrate our Lions' success.

Lots of our pupils have been enjoying singing football songs in class this week too. Check out our Facebook page to see them in action. It's coming home!!

Don't forget: Duke's Sixth Form transition day next week!
Next Monday (12th July) is transition day for all of our new Sixth Form students!

The day will start with a special assembly about Sixth Form life and what students can expect from September. They will receive a free breakfast and then will get to experience sample lessons (for their current options) for the rest of the day with a quiz to enjoy during tutor time.  We will follow this up with transition tasks to complete over the summer.

To help students stay up to date with all of the latest news from Duke's Sixth Form during the holidays, we've joined Instagram! Follow our brand new account @Dukes_Sixth_Form

Competition winnings bring celebrated artist to Duke's
Earlier this week, artist Artist Isabella Carreras hosted a bespoke workshop at Duke's Secondary School for group of Year 7 students, funded by Northumberland County Council off the back of our student, Lamisa, winning the International Women's Day art competition they organised back in March.

Isabella worked with students to create artwork which celebrated their own self confidence and 'power'. They used a combination of 3D design, Hannah Hocke inspired collage, and Sue Tompkins inspired text art to have an exciting day filled with critical thinking, collaboration and joy!

Why Britishvolt's gigafactory is fantastic news for our pupils
On Tuesday, Northumberland County Council granted planning permission for Britishvolt to build a huge electric car battery ‘gigafactory’ at Cambois by 2023. When fully operational, this will produce 300,000 electric car batteries each year, employing around 3,000 people directly with an expected 5,000 further jobs with suppliers. The factory will be one of the 20 largest buildings in the UK and represents a £2.6 billion investment, which is the largest single investment in the North East since the opening of the Nissan factory in Sunderland.

OK, so far this blog has sounded like a news report and you will probably be wondering why a school leader is writing about a new factory... The simple reason is that Britishvolt will create incredible opportunities for the pupils in our schools and will mean a more hopeful and prosperous future for Northumberland. I believe this to be true for two reasons.

Firstly, there will be well-paid, skilled jobs on offer at the plant, which hopefully will be here for the very long term.  This offers some amazing career opportunities for our pupils to access, but only if they have the right qualifications and above all, the right attitude to fit into the culture of the employer. As a Trust, we are very fortunate to have strong links with many local employers, such as AkzoNobel, who have the world’s most advanced paint factory based right here in Ashington.

It’s very clear from our work with employers that being able to fit into their culture is absolutely vital to a successful career. Many organisations now make assessing cultural fit a key part of their recruitment process and probationary period when joining. One of NCEAT’s key objectives is to help our pupils to develop skills such as teamwork, problem solving and good communications, because we recognise that these are in high demand from employers and we want our pupils to have the best opportunities. Alongside this, we work to educate our pupils on the range of careers available and the qualifications needed for success.

There is no doubt that Britishvolt will bring many high quality career opportunities, but many of these will also require particular qualifications as well as skills, so we need to ensure that our pupils and parents are aware of the importance of post-16 qualifications in Maths and Science in particular.

The second reason to welcome Britishvolt’s investment is because it represents a low carbon, sustainable future for our region...
