Difference: Why don’t we just talk about it?
Understanding and intervening with difference in the workplace

Differences at work such as race, gender, class, religion often creates a deep discomfort or anxiety for all staff. The risk of not grappling and engaging with difference could potentially result in a great poverty of mind and robs us of uniqueness and rich experiences within an organisation. The presentation will firstly, explore the two main anxieties that difference evokes in organisations. Secondly, how current diversity training, transformation interventions and change management that address difference are not always effective. Finally, propose using a psychodynamic lens to understand difference and how to intervene within organisations, ensuring authentic conversations which result in lasting impact.

Learning Objectives:
1. Understand the anxieties that differences within organisations evoke.
2. Understand why some interventions are not effective.
3. Deeper understanding and insight into differences within organisations.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER - WHO ARE KEVASHNI GOVENDER-NAIDOO  & AYESHA BOOLEY SCHREUDER ?

Kevashini and Ayesha are clinical psychologists from University of Cape Town with 30 years of combined experience. They work extensively within the public and private sectors in South Africa and UK. Through their work, they identified a gap in how organisations are understood and intervened with. To meet this vast and growing need they now offer specialist consultation to organisations. They work closely with their clients to develop a clear, shared view of the issues and to co-create interventions with real lasting impact. Kevashni and Ayesha's overall goal is to assist organisations to find ways in which to better resource themselves and reflect more deeply about the work that they do.
