The Winter of Diplomacy
North Dakota History, Vol. 71, Nos. 1 & 2, 2004
Construction of Fort Mandan was completed in late November 1804 as the winter home of the Corps of Discovery, the expedition led by Meriwether Lewis and William Clark. During five months of a bitterly cold winter, the expedition and their Mandan and Hidatsa hosts enjoyed fellowship, with visits nearly a daily occurrence. After the initial apprehensions dissipated, the communication between the two vastly different groups became much freer. Each side was curious about the other, and the Americans were a source of wonder, mystery, and humor to the Mandan and Hidatsa people.

Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan Transfer to State Historical Society of North Dakota
On July 1, the State Historical Society welcomed two new state historic sites formerly managed by the North Dakota Parks and Recreation Department: the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center and Fort Mandan, both near Washburn. Visiting hours, public tours, and services at each site remain the same.
The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center offers engaging exhibits, hundreds of period artifacts, world-class art collections, and interpreters who tell the story of the Lewis and Clark Expedition’s arrival at the Mandan and Hidatsa villages in 1804. Visitors can also step back in time at the reconstructed Fort Mandan, a furnished, full-size replica of the fort in which the Lewis and Clark Expedition spent the winter of 1804-1805.

Tax Incentive Programs Reward Property Owners
Historic buildings are our tangible links with the past, helping give communities a sense of identity, stability and orientation. One way the federal government encourages the preservation of historic buildings is through the Federal Historic Preservation Tax Incentives program. These incentives reward private investment in rehabilitating historic properties such as offices, rental housing, and retail stores.
The state of North Dakota encourages the preservation of historic buildings through the Renaissance Zone Tax Incentives, providing incentives for private investment in rehabilitating historic properties that are located within a city’s designated Renaissance Zone. Many buildings qualify for both tax incentive programs.
