Monday, Monday

July 12—Welcome back to the grind! Chad Radford behind the wheel with another Monday morning Draft.

🌧️ It looks like a rainy start to the week—84° is the high, at least that's what ye olde iPhone weather app predicts.

🚀 If you missed it yesterday, Richard Branson went to space. On July 20, Jeff Bezos will try it as well.

🍦 Last month, Food & Wine magazine posted an exhaustive list of "The Best Ice Cream in Every State." Where Georgia is concerned, the author gives a nod to Decatur's Cremalosa Gelato, a shop owned by long-time Atlanta food writer Meredith Ford. 🤔

I don't want to split waffle cones here, but gelato and ice cream are two different things; although gelato does mean ice cream in Italian. Either way, my personal list of the best ice cream shops in town begins and ends with Big Softie. I don't even mess with the rest. What say you

🕖 Today's Draft features five stories. We catch up with Stephanie Stuckey for an "In the Mix" playlist. Plus, we've had some superhero sightings around town, a Dunwoody native is en route to the Tokyo Olympics, and our Monday Look & Listen column is jam packed .

🌟 Speaking of looking and listening, we have partnered with the good folks at Into the Wildwood to give away tickets to see St. Paul & the Broken Bones. Share your personal referral link (

Rock on!

1. Road trip with road trip royalty

🚙 Stephanie Stuckey (above, at the Majestic Diner) spent more than a decade serving in the Georgia House of Representatives, before becoming director of an environmentally focused law firm, then the City of Atlanta’s director of sustainability and chief resilience officer.

In 2019, she bought back the family business—the famed Stuckey’s chain of roadside diners and convenient stores.

Now, as CEO of the company, she’s on a mission to breathe new life into the brand, and has been on the road paying a visit to each and every one of the 65 Stuckey’s locations throughout the Southeast, Southwest, and Midwest (follow her adventures on Instagram).

Atlanta Intown editor Collin Kelley caught up with Stuckey while she was back in Atlanta to talk about life on the road, where she likes to eat, and where she likes to unwind.

Stuckey also hooked us up with her road trip-themed playlist, sporting hits and deep cuts by everyone from Prince and the Boss to R.E.M., Aretha Franklin, Chuck Berry, and more.

Head over to Atlanta Intown to read their conversation, and to hear more from her playlist featured in this month’s “In The Mix” column.

2. Krog is open, even if parking is tough

👷 If you've driven by Krog Street Market recently, you've likely noticed that most of the parking has vanished due to construction. The garage on the Southside is gone (above), and now the gravel lot at the corner of Lake and Krog is fenced off.

That massive rebranding and expansion project that we reported on in April's Atlanta Intown is now becoming a reality. And, it's kinda messy if you're looking for parking.

We checked with some restaurants who assure us that they are open and are keen to see your smiling faces, but that you should try to use a rideshare service like Uber or Lyft, or come via the BeltLine.

You can park across the street at the Ayla deck at Stove Works, at Studioplex, or there is a valet in the front of Krog market, but definitely plan ahead.

After getting through the pandemic with bumps and bruises, the lack of parking is a dash of salt in the proverbial wound. Although it's nothing a More Supreme cocktail at Ticonderoga Club or the sneakily good Watchman's Burger won't cure.
"My Top 5 Something" is a new feature every Friday. Know somebody who has an interesting Top 5 Something? Let us know, and you may see them in an upcoming Friday Rough Draft!

3. What's filming in Georgia?

Shazam! Fury of the Gods, the sequel to DC Films’ 2019 Shazam!, is lighting up the streets of Atlanta ... literally. Last Wednesday, production turned the intersection of Luckie and Forsyth streets into an arena of mass destruction. Flipped cars blocked the crosswalks and, yes, there was even one on fire. Zachary Levi, who plays the beloved superhero, was spotted in full costume at the scene. If this setup is any indication, Fury of the Gods will be just as action-packed as its predecessor.

Fury of the Gods started shooting in Atlanta in May and has since been spotted regularly around the city. In early June, cinematographer Gyula Pados posted photos of the crew filming atop one of downtown’s lofty parking decks with some massive camera cranes. Since then, the production has also set up shop in Summerhill, with storefronts along Georgia Avenue transformed into Philadelphia mom-and-pop shops. Be on the lookout for a red lightning bolt suit around town.

4. To Tokyo via Dunwoody

Swimmer Brooks Curry, a 20-year-old Dunwoody native, has qualified for the U.S. Olympic team in the men’s 100-meter freestyle.

Curry grew up swimming at Dynamo Swim Club in Chamblee, and currently attends Louisiana State University. He will be the first American swimmer in the program’s history to go to the Olympics.

“Brooks made history for this program … [t]his is the most difficult team to make in all of sports, hands down, history shows this,” said LSU Associate Head Coach Steve Mellor. “The work that has gone on behind the scenes for this to happen took a village, and Brooks is a product of a man that believed he could shock the world.”

Next stop, Tokyo.
