Saint and Sinner in Disney’s Cruella

Rev. Ted Giese considers the tension between good and evil in his latest movie review of Disney's Cruella.

"Gillespie and his writers Dana Fox and Tony McNamara have taken one of Disney’s least likeable villains and made her 95% likeable. Cruella is a clever well-made film which accomplishes what it sets out to do. But is what it sets out to do a good thing?"

Submissions!

We are always looking for regional news stories to highlight in print and online! In general, stories published in the Regional News sections of The Canadian Lutheran magazine tell the story of events that that have already happened, not things that will happen. They can be about a congregation’s significant anniversary or other landmark occasion, a mission or outreach event, a retreat or special event hosted by a Lutheran Church–Canada (LCC) organization, or other church involvement in the community. For more submission guidelines, check out The Canadian Lutheran Media Kit (Pages 3-4) or the Editors and Submissions Page by clicking the buttons below.

Advertising!

The Canadian Lutheran welcomes advertising in print and online to help offset the cost of operating the magazine (printing and shipping costs, as well as website hosting costs).

Classified ads appear on the second last page of the magazine. Classified space is sold at $0.50 per word, at a minimum of 50 words ($25.00).

All other advertising opportunities—including ads with graphics for the print version of the magazine, and online advertising opportunities—are explained in the The Canadian Lutheran Media Kit (Pages 5-6) by clicking the button below.

Being Content

"For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities.” - 2 Corinthians 12:10

It would be difficult to find a person that delights in weakness. It goes against human nature to be happy with insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. Yet Paul found contentment in Christ even though all these things happened to him. To be content means to accept what the Lord gives us at any given time as somehow being from the hand of the Father who wants to bless us. Sometimes it’s difficult to see how things like hardships, calamities, and insults will turn out as a blessing, but that is why Paul found this contentment in Christ and not in his own wisdom.

The key phrase in the verse is “for the sake of Christ”. For Christ's sake we are able be content to suffer these things, knowing that He not only gives us the necessary strength to endure, but that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is to be revealed to us. Even when the world considers us to be weak and foolish, beset by all sorts of problems and persecutions, we know our strength is found in the Lord—for in Christ we are more than conquerors through Him Who loved us and gave Himself for us. This is news worth sharing.

Supporting the work of your church through tithes, offerings and end-of-life charitable gifts helps your congregation continue to share this great news. If you have never considered creating a gift in your Will, please consider the impact a gift like that will have. To learn more about developing your gift, please visit www.lutheranfoundation.ca for more information, or contact your regional Foundation Gift Coordinator.

Your bank doesn’t care if you trust your children! Despite the fact you may have wonderful children and you believe they will “do the right thing”, the bigger question is whether they will be allowed to do it. Without proper documentation your bank is not going to release your information or hand over your savings account to your son or daughter no matter how much you trust them. They won't allow them to sell your home or change ownership on your cottage. The insurance company, the financial advisor, the pension administrator, the motor vehicle registry, and the doctors probably won't tell them anything at all, never mind let them do anything. Parental approval is not legal authority. You may think it is too costly to create the appropriate legal documents today but the cost of dealing with the courts later can be significantly higher. To learn more about how to create wonderful estate plans, please visit www.lutheranfoundation.ca or contact your regional gift coordinator.

SEVENTH SUNDAY AFTER PENTECOST (Proper 10B)

Ephesians 1:3–14
Mark 6:14–29

The Lord Jesus Brings His People through Death into Life by the Preaching of Repentance

Amos did not choose to be a prophet, but the Lord took him “from following the flock” and said to him, “Go, prophesy to my people Israel” (Amos 7:15). It was a hard word given him to preach: King Jeroboam would “die by the sword,” and Israel would “go into exile away from his land” (Amos 7:10–11). For this word, Amos was hated and threatened. St. John the Baptist also suffered for his faithful preaching of repentance. King Herod “sent and seized John and bound him in prison,” even though he knew that John “was a righteous and holy man” (Mark 6:17, 20). Out of pride and fear, Herod “sent an executioner with orders to bring John’s head” (Mark 6:27). Yet in Christ, St. John the Baptist “has been raised from the dead” (Mark 6:14, 16). For Christ is the destruction of death itself “before the foundation of the world,” and even now by faith, “the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ” has blessed us in Christ “with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places” (Eph. 1:3–4). Through Baptism into Christ, you also “were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit” for life and salvation (Eph. 1:13).
