Arson attacks across Auckland as gang feud heats up

Detectives believe arson attacks on cars across Auckland and a firebombing and shooting at a barbershop, may be linked to a simmering feud between gangs, Stuff reports. The King Cobras are feuding with the Rebels outlaw motorcycle gang, over control of territory in Māngere. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact police, or call anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Waiheke protector injured after being 'rammed' by marina developer's boat

A protector at the Kennedy Point marina site was left with a sprained neck and wrist after construction crew “rammed” her with their boat while she was protesting in the water, Stuff reports. Days after the incident, Aiya van Kooten, 28, is still shaken and recovering. She was trapped between buoys with her head held underwater. Kooten filed a police complaint after experiencing what she called “extreme violence” while “peacefully protesting” in her ancestral moana.

Police car ramming in downtown Auckland: Woman, 60, charged

A 60-year-old woman appears in Auckland District Court today, after she allegedly rammed her car into a police vehicle in downtown Auckland, NZ Herald reports. She faces charges which include driving a motor vehicle in a dangerous manner and assault with a weapon. Police were called to downtown Auckland Wednesday morning, just after 8am, after a report that a person was driving on the wrong side of the road on Quay St.

Bronze penguin stolen from Campbells Bay beach, North Shore

A bronze penguin at a beach on Auckland’s North Shore has been snatched by an unknown thief, Stuff reports. Police are asking for help from the public in locating the sculpture – one of a group of six bronze kororā, or little blue penguins – after it was taken from Campbells Bay beach in late June. Anyone with information that could help reunite the penguin with its bronze brothers and sisters is encouraged to call police on 105 quoting file number 210624/2655.

Auckland Airport prepares for busiest day since Covid-19 pandemic

Auckland Airport, the country's biggest airport, is preparing for its busiest day since Covid-19 clamped down on travel, as people make the most of the school holidays, RNZ reports. The airport expects 28,000 people to travel via its domestic terminal on Friday (the highest number since last March), and more than 700,000 arrivals and departures through its domestic terminal in July - a 44 percent increase on last year. Airlines have responded by putting on more services.

Nationwide recall of Countdown-branded salad batch over listeria fears

A specific batch of a Countdown-branded pre-packed salad sold at supermarkets across the country has been recalled due to fears of listeria contamination, NZ Herald reports. Listeria was discovered through routine testing in a specific batch of Countdown's potato, egg and bacon salad with a use-by-date of July 13, 2021. The supermarket chain initiated the recall from its Countdown, Fresh Choice and Supervalue stores across the country. New Zealand Food Safety advised that the product should either be thrown away or returned for a refund.

Fire truck shortage, but dozens of new chassis sit idle in south Auckland

Dozens of new fire truck chassis purchased to plug a gap in New Zealand's beleaguered fleet have sat idle at a yard in south Auckland for about a year, Stuff reveals. About 35 sparkling new MAN double-cab trucks, ready to be built into fire appliances, are sitting in rows at the Penske yard in Wiri. The sight of the lined up chassis has sparked frustration among the ranks of firefighters who are grappling with a shortage of trucks and an ageing fleet.

Auckland's ASB Showgrounds rumoured to become a mass Covid-19 vaccination centre

Auckland's ASB Showgrounds could become a large vaccination centre as the country nears the Group 4 vaccination roll-out, NZ Herald reports. One of the country's biggest venues, it is being considered as a location for a large vaccination centre and could still operate in liquidation. With New Zealand nearing Group 4 vaccination rollout, Matt Hannant, programme lead at Northern Region Health Co-ordination Centre, said health officials are planning for large-scale vaccination events in Auckland.

Police searching for missing 16-year-old previously in Auckland

Police are still seeking information on the whereabouts of a 16-year-old girl who was previously in Auckland, Stuff reports. On a Manawatū, Taranaki, Whanganui-Ruapehu Police Facebook page, police said the girl goes by the name of Georgina, and she'd previously been in Auckland but did not arrive in Taranaki as expected. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact Police on 111 and quote file number 210703/1566.

Auckland woman needed plastic surgery after being mauled by dog in reserve

Auckland woman Shea Lauty has been left with life-changing facial injuries after being mauled by a dog in an Auckland reserve, Stuff reports. Lauty remains in Middlemore Hospital, following surgery to “put her face back together” after the attack in Onehunga on Monday. According to Lauty's partner, Lasalle Carr, she had been walking their german shepherd, Beau, around Captain Springs Reserve during her lunch break, when she saw a man struggling to control one of his three pit bull terriers, and "one of them had already snuck up on her and started to attack their dog."

Shopping will become more expensive over the next few months

Retailers are planning to increase prices over the next three months to cover the rising import costs, Stuff reports. Retail NZ Retail Radar report shows the main factor for looming price increases is the increasing freight costs, increased rents and council rates, and the minimum wage rate rise which became mandatory on April 1. But shoe retailer Don Wearing, who owns three shops in Auckland and Wellington, says that a price increase is the last thing most want to do to keep their business alive.
