HLPF: Tune in and take action

This week, Women Deliver and the Deliver for Good Campaign will join advocates and civil society at the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), a platform established by the UN to monitor, track, evaluate, and report on Member States' progress across all 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Held every July, the HLPF consists of ministerial discussions, in which Member States must report on their country’s progress on a select subset of the SDGs.

This year, the theme of the HLPF is “Sustainable and resilient recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic that promotes the economic, social, and environmental dimensions of sustainable development: building an inclusive and effective path for the achievement of the 2030 Agenda in the context of the decade of action and delivery for sustainable development," with a focus on SDGs 1, 2, 3, 8, 10, 12, 13, 16, and 17. As we know, the pandemic has had a devastating impact on social, political, and economic growth. Governments must prevent the rollback of hard-earned gains on sustainable development, including poverty eradication, human rights, climate, and gender equality.

To do this, governments need to place girls and women at the center of SDG policymaking, implementation, and review. At the HLPF, the Deliver for Good Campaign, which is powered by Women Deliver, will join civil society in holding governments and the UN accountable to their promise to achieve the SDGs — while centering girls and women in these efforts — by 2030, and work to collaboratively strengthen the overall HLPF system and mechanism to reflect the needs of those most marginalized. The Campaign has been engaged with the HLPF since its launch in 2016. Read on to learn more about the Deliver for Good Campaign and its latest efforts to advance the SDGs from a gender perspective.

Mainstreaming gender equality across the SDGs

Gender equality is cross-cutting across all SDGs. Political, programmatic, and financial investments in the health, rights, and well-being of girls and women, in all their diversity, are the driving force to implementing the SDGs successfully. This is the core mandate of the Deliver for Good Campaign. This year, for greater impact, Deliver for Good has revised its partnership structure, focusing on country and regional action — specifically Pan-African action, and globally anchoring itself in SDG policy-influencing.

The Deliver for Good Campaign will continue to work to mainstream gender equality across the SDGs via convening, capacity-sharing, and campaigning. The Campaign believes that the leadership of girls and women, and their organizations, to carry out advocacy and policy influencing activities is fundamental to the implementation of the SDGs from a gender perspective.

As a diverse network of global, regional, and national gender equality actors, the Campaign will continue to:

Facilitate a global dialogue among critical actors that are often siloed in their gender equality advocacy efforts;
Prioritize funding for country and regional convenings; and
Link the country, regional, and global spheres to build solidarity among stakeholders and enable policy coherence in SDG-related processes like the HLPF.

Recommitting to country mobilization and impact

As announced at the Generation Equality Forum, the Deliver for Good Campaign is recommitting to country mobilization and impact by doubling financial resources for country partners’ convening and collective action in Kenya and Senegal and facilitating their access to regional and global policy spaces.

The Campaign has collaborated alongside its partners, CREAW in Kenya and Réseau Siggil Jigéen and Energy for Impact in Senegal, to define and set the Campaign’s advocacy priorities based on the needs of girls and women in their contexts and corresponding policy opportunities, in alignment with the SDGs.

Together, the Campaign hopes to:

Build a collective voice that advocates for the mainstreaming of gender equality as a part of Kenya and Senegal's SDG implementation.
Facilitate the participation and engagement of national and regional women's rights organizations to influence gender equality and SDG-related policies, practices, and investments.
Amplify the influence and impact of country and regional engagement to ensure that global action towards gender equality is informed and driven by local actors and realities.
