Hey Haida Gwaii writers,
It’s Thursday – the Tip-of-the-Week day, in anticipation of your weekend writing. This week’s advice comes from American author Mark Twain (1835-1910), who wrote this observation in a letter in response to a student’s text:
“I see you use plain, simple language, short words and brief sentences. That is the way to write English—it is the modern way and the best way. Stick to it; don't let fluff and flowers and verbosity creep in.”
Too many adjectives or obscure words actually detract from what you’re trying to say! If you feel you must use a lot of adjectives on your first draft, go ahead and do so—but when you review what you’ve written, see if you really need all those extra words.
Ps I’ll be sending out these weekly tips until the mid-August Writing Invitation deadline. If you wish to be taken off this email list, please simply reply to this email with the word UNSUBSCRIBE in the subject line.
Happy wordsmithing,
Adele
