COVID-19 - England moves onto Step 4

On Monday 12 July, the Prime Minister confirmed that England will move into Step 4 of the government’s roadmap on Monday 19 July.

The government has published updated guidance on how to stay safe and help prevent the spread of COVID-19 from 19 July, which contains the details of Step 4 and how the government will continue to manage the risk of serious illness from the spread of the virus.

The publication includes the next steps on face coverings and working from home, the re-opening of remaining businesses, NHS Test and Trace, and the findings of the social distancing and certification reviews.

At Step 4, the government will remove outstanding legal restrictions on social contact, life events, and open the remaining closed settings, enabling people to make informed decisions about how to manage the risk to themselves and others.

For businesses and venues:

  • All businesses should follow the principles set out in the updated working safely guidance.

  • All remaining closed businesses and venues such as nightclubs and adult entertainment venues will be able to reopen.

  • All capacity limits at sporting, entertainment or business events will be lifted. Guidance for events and attractions from Step 4 has also been published.

  • Hospitality venues such as pubs, restaurants and bars will no longer be required to provide table service or follow other social distancing rules.

  • Higher risk business settings may use the NHS COVID Pass as a condition of entry, to reduce the risk of COVID-19. This will especially be the case in large, crowded venues where people are likely to be in close contact with people outside their household.

  • The NHS COVID Pass will be made available through the NHS app, the NHS website, or as a letter that can be requested by ringing NHS 119. Visitors will also be able to show text or email confirmation of test results. Organisations should ensure they are following all legal obligations, including on equalities.

  • Businesses are also encouraged to continue displaying QR codes for customers wishing to check in using the NHS COVID-19 app, or to continue collecting customer contact details to support NHS Test and Trace. However, this will no longer be a legal requirement.

The government will review the current guidance in September.

HM government/NHS. From 19 July, limits on social contact will be lifted. Consider limiting close contact with people you do not live with and open windows to let fresh air in.

Flash floods - support for affected businesses

On Monday, many businesses across Haringey were affected by flash flooding. Our Town Centre Management team have visited businesses in the affected areas to offer support and advice.

See our dedicated webpage with guidance on what to do after a flood.

Support and advice issued by Public Health England and the Environment Agency can be found in the 'Flooding: advice for the public' publication (PDF 1.6MB). The guidance includes tips on how to safely clean your property and the precautions to take.

Businesses should contact their insurers as a priority if they have been flooded and contact their landlords. Remember to take photos of water damage including to stock which will help with your claim.

Should your business need further support, please contact business@haringey.gov.uk

Don’t delay – get your COVID-19 vaccine today!

With the remaining COVID-19 restrictions to be lifted on 19 July, it is important that as many people as possible get vaccinated across London, where vaccination rates are lower than in other parts of the UK.

COVID-19 infection rates continue to rise in Haringey, driven by the highly transmissible Delta variant (first identified in India).

Everyone aged 18+ has the right to be vaccinated against COVID-19 – you don’t need to be registered with a GP and your migration status does not affect this. Information will not be shared with the Home Office or other authorities.

We want to ensure that everyone living or working in the borough can access vaccination, to help protect you, your families and the community from serious illness and avoidable deaths.

Getting double vaccinated offers the best protection against the virus, but you must allow 8 weeks between your first and second dose.

Please see our COVID-19 vaccinations page for full details.

There are many walk-in vaccination clinics running across the borough at different times and locations, most notably the 'Super Sunday' mass vaccination event at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium on Sunday 18 July (more details below).

Thank you for playing your part to Keep Haringey Safe.

Book an appointment via Eventbrite, or just walk in on the day. The clinic will be administering the first and second doses of the Pfizer vaccine, with second doses only being given to those who received their first Pfizer jab on or before Sunday 23 May.

All attendees will receive an exclusive 20% discount on Stadium Tours and The Dare Skywalk which can be redeemed online.

COVID-19: The importance of good ventilation

With restrictions lifting and businesses bringing staff back into work premises, the safety of everyone entering the building is essential, including the ventilation system requirements.

The law says employers must make sure there is an adequate supply of fresh air (ventilation) in enclosed areas of the workplace.

Good ventilation is one tool used to help reduce transmission of COVID-19, and this must be considered alongside other recommendations such as masks, social distancing and hand hygiene, as detailed in the working safely guidance produced by the Health and Safety Executive.

Why ventilation is important:

  • Good ventilation removes virus particles in the air and reduces transmission
  • The more fresh air that is brought inside, the quicker any airborne virus will be removed from a room
  • Levels of the virus can build up in poorly ventilated rooms and can linger even after the infected person has left

Mechanical ventilation/Air conditioning:

  • Mechanical ventilation/air conditioning should bring fresh air in and not recirculate indoor air
  • Devices that only recirculate indoor air will not remove airborne viruses from the space

What you can do to make your business safer?

  • Appropriate ventilation should be considered as part of your COVID-19 risk assessment
  • Contact a competent mechanical engineer/ventilation specialist if you have concerns about the ventilation in your premises
  • Detailed ventilation guidance for workplaces and public buildings during the pandemic is provided by the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers
  • The Health and Safety Executive provides advice on Ventilation and air conditioning during the COVID-19 pandemic

Green New Deal: Circular pilot grants and free expert advice for SMEs

To help catalyse London’s green recovery from the pandemic, ReLondon has launched a support package to help small and medium enterprises (SMEs) reap the financial and environmental benefits of the circular economy.

Thanks to funding from the Mayor of London’s Green New Deal fund, SMEs can now apply for:

  • free expert advice to help them explore opportunities to cut waste, increase revenue and reduce costs through circular economy business models
  • grants of £10,000-£15,000 to trial circular economy pilots that could help their business grow

The deadline for grant applications is Sunday 18 July.

What will be funded?

To be eligible for funding, pilots must fit with one or more of the circular business models as outlined in the circular pilot grant applicant guidance (PDF, 4MB). Circular economy projects might include:

  • implementing a product or packaging take-back scheme
  • launching a new revenue stream through leasing products or by recovering a new waste stream
  • launching a refillable or reusable system or product
  • designing a modular product

Pilots should represent a new activity for the business and not simply expand an existing model.

Both support offers are open to SMEs from any sector, with priority given to those hardest hit by the pandemic, such as hospitality, retail and entertainment businesses. Businesses with BAME or female leadership, in particular, are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should complete and submit the application form by 11.59pm on Sunday 18 July 2021. Only businesses meeting the eligibility criteria should apply.

London Refill scheme

The London Refill scheme is a dedicated app that lists places where people can refill their water bottle, coffee cup, lunchbox, groceries and even their cleaning products and toiletries.

The scheme supports Haringey Council's summer preparedness strategy, which aims to help staff and residents prepare themselves for extreme heat.

Refill Stations include everything from fountains where you can fill up your bottle, to cafés and restaurants where you can get a hot drink in a reusable cup, to retailers and supermarkets with packaging-free isles and everything in between.

Anyone can download the free Refill app to tap into a global network of places to reduce, reuse and refill.

For businesses wanting to participate and get listed on the app, it is totally free and very simple to do.

To get started, you first need to download the Refill app, select ‘add a Refill station’ and fill in your details. Alternatively, you can complete the online form on the Refill website.

Look out for signs of modern slavery in Haringey

Help free the UK from modern slavery.Modern slavery is happening in Haringey but due to its hidden nature, it is difficult to know its true extent. However, it is estimated that there are at least 100,000 victims of modern slavery in the UK every year.

Modern slavery can take many forms, but it is essentially the exploitation of people who have been forced, deceived, or coerced into a life of labour, servitude, or exploitation.

You can help identify modern slavery by spotting some of the signs:

  • appearing to be under the control of someone else and reluctant to interact with others
  • not having personal identification on them and having very few personal belongings
  • not being able to move around freely
  • being reluctant to talk to strangers or the authorities
  • appearing frightened, withdrawn, or showing signs of physical or psychological abuse

To report any concerns, please contact us on 020 8489 1400 or email modernslavery@haringey.gov.uk
