Zoar Sewing Circle Summer 2021 Update
Greetings and Salutations Zoar Sewing Circle!
As the pandemic loosens it’s grip, we are sure many of you want to know where we are and what our plans for the rest of the year are. We have spent the last 15 months sewing at home, ordering fabric – we scored rolls of sheeting for backs instead of having to buy sheets!-, and trying to figure out how to make everything work. A huge thank you to everyone stepping up and doing whatever they could to keep us going.
First, what we have accomplished. On May 10, thanks to everyone working at home and Jen and Karen working in the room, we were able to donate 70 quilts, 100 health kits, 8 fleece blankets, 3 afghans, and 23 quilts of various sizes (given to us by Love, Inc.) to Clackamas County Department of Human Services. Ashley from DHS was overjoyed to have a mostly normal donation to take back to both the Oregon City and Clackamas office. We promised her we would have a potluck in December and that Tater Tot Casserole (her favourite!) would be on the menu. Everyone at DHS sends a huge thank you!
We also presented Service quilts to Ardeth Woods and Darline Kraxberger. Since we didn’t have the potluck, we had to get a bit creative to get the quilts to them, but they still seemed surprised and happy to be honoured.
And we made quilts for our high school graduates! Congratulations to Kyler and Raquel!
Where we are right now – Multiple large donations of fabric, yarn, and supplies have come in. The room is full to bursting with boxes and bins. Jen and Karen are spending 1-2 days each week sorting through everything, determining what we can use and if it needs to be washed, and re-thinking how we have the room organized. These pictures are before the last two donations! We expect it to take the rest of the summer to sort through everything.
That leads to what are our plans for the rest of the year – We plan to take the rest of July and August to get the room in order and to resume tying in the room in September. Days and times are still being talked about. Are the first and third Wednesdays from 9-2 still a good time for most? Do we need an evening or a Saturday? Is there a better day of the week? How many people are interested in tying? Please contact Jen (503-263-6453 jjkatharinas@gmail.com) or Karen (971-409-3495, oregonvandals@canby.com) with your preferences. We will send an update in August with the fall calendar.
Since there will not be a Craft Fair this year, we hope to have a quilt/fiber arts sale in the late fall. Jen is hard at work designing queen and baby quilts. More details will come as we figure out exactly what this looks like.
We have kits and blocks available for anyone who would like to sew tops at home over the summer. Contact Jen to arrange a pickup or stop by the church during office hours.
We pray all is well with you and want you to know that you are thought of often.
In God’s peace,
Jennifer Benz and Karen Brennan, co-chairs
