7|09|2021 I Believe...

<<First Name>>
“In the beginning, God…”  These opening words of the Bible always cause me to pause.  Before anything else existed, before anything came to be, there was God, the creator and giver of life.  Now, Christianity isn’t the only faith to believe in a creator, in fact, many people claim faith in God, but not all understandings of God are the same.  So what is it that we as Christians really confess?  How is our understanding of God different?  How does our view make a difference in our daily lives?

By its second century of existence, the Christian faith was running into all sorts of problems.  Various leaders had their own interpretations of the scriptures which didn’t always line up with others and sometimes became problematic.  Some claimed to have secret knowledge (known as gnosticism) revealed to them in mysterious ways, which led to more divisions and many astray.  The church needed a common confession of faith to profess, and so in the later half of the second century, the Apostle’s Creed was formed.  It provides a concise summary of the faith Christians hold together across denominational lines.

What we believe makes a difference in our lives. We don’t just believe in a creator God who brought the world into being; we believe in a God who continues to be involved in our world and cares about our God.  We don’t believe in a God who is all powerful, holy, and will judge us, but we believe in a God who was willing to step into our world and rescue us, paying the penalty for our sin.  We don’t believe in a God who is off in the heavens, over the galaxies too far removed from us, but we believe in a God who knows the intimate details of our lives and loves us.

The Apostles Creed begins, “I Believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.” We confess our faith in a God who is almighty in power, and a loving father in his goodness.  We confess a faith in a God who is the perfect combination of power and goodness, a God who created, and loves, a God who is mighty and gracious.

Over the next several weeks, we are embarking on a journey to dive into what it is that we believe as Christians.  We invite you to journey with us as we dive into our beliefs and discover how what we believe can make a difference in our daily life.  As a part of our series we will hold a special baptismal service in August and will conclude the series with a special service confirming our faith. Join us Sundays at 10 am at Eagle View Elementary School, or online on Facebook and Youtube.

In Christ’s Service,
