Office for Human Life Joins Parish Life

Please join us in welcoming Mary von Carlowitz to the Secretariat for Parish Life and Development.  As Director, Office for Human Life, Mary is responsible for planning, coordinating and effectively integrating the activities of the Office for Human Life within a consistent ethic of life. Most recently, Mary served as the co-director of faith formation at Church of the Gesu. She also spent many years at St. Gabriel Parish as coordinator of youth and young adult ministry, and parish and school ministry. Please keep Mary in prayer as she enters this new phase of service to the Church and to the people of the Diocese of Cleveland. Mary can be reached at (216) 696-6525 x2335 or mvoncarlowitz@dioceseofcleveland.org.

"Gentlemen at Grafton" are Volunteer of the Year

Catholic Charities President and CEO Patrick Gareau and Sister Rita Mary Harwood, SND, Secretary for Parish Life and Development, honored and thanked nearly 30 incarcerated men at Grafton Correctional Institution. Each man received a certificate recognizing them collectively as the “Catholic Charities Volunteer of the Year” for all they have done to protect and assist the wider community during COVID-19.
Sister Rita Mary, who leads the Diocesan Ministry to the Incarcerated, received a call from Grafton's deputy warden early in the pandemic. The top administration and the men at the prison wanted to know what they could do to help. With fabric and supplies provided by the Diocesan Ministry to the Incarcerated, the men made more than 40,000 masks that were distributed to Catholic Charities staff working as first responders. Many Catholic school teachers, staff, and students also received the soft and colorful masks. The men who reached out wanting to help have come to be known as "the Gentlemen at Grafton," as one student dubbed them in his note of thanks.
