STONE SOUP: A PASTORAL MESSAGE ABOUT
RE-OPENING

Don’t we just want to be together again?
This past Sunday, we did our first trial run at being back in the sanctuary... it was our first experiment with a dual-platform service with a few in the sanctuary and everyone else at home.  Which means it was the first time most of the dozen (tech helpers) present had been in the building in well over a year, and the first time to be with other UFPers in person.
It was heartwarming. It was exciting. It was a success. And it wasn’t perfect. Read more...

ANTI-RACISM MOVIE NIGHT
Friday, July 16, 7pm

The Anti-Racism Action Group (ARAG) is hosting a series of film nights that will include post-film discussions to help us understand of the issues that inspire the need for an 8th Principle.
The first film is The Skin We’re In about Desmond Cole, who has written a book by the same name addressing systemic racism in Canada. Will Ward will host this film, introducing it and hosting the post-film discussion.
Each film night will include an introduction by an ARAG “host”, the film itself via screen sharing, a discussion following the film, and a wrap up by the host.
More films will be announced soon!

FAITH BEYOND BELIEF: THE JIGSAW PUZZLE SERMON

NOTE these summertime changes:
Sunday services will begin at 10:30am, AND the link to join is not the ‘usual’ one.

Years ago I set out to write an ambitious sermon presenting an overarching view of UU theology. While I struggled with writing and rewriting, I would turn to a jigsaw puzzle I’d started over the holidays. Given how many of us have become puzzle fans in the pandemic, it seems a good time to share this story again about puzzling out our theology. My initial intention for the service promised this: “People are often surprised to find out that Unitarians do not share a belief system. The idea that half of us are atheists and agnostics who find relevance in congregational life, is simply beyond their imagining. Why would atheists come to church? And why would Theists consort with ‘heathens’? Perhaps Albert Einstein’s advice prevails: “Never lose a holy curiosity.””

Speaker: Rev. Jessica P. Rodela
(Grand River Unitarian Congregation, Kitchener)

Small group conversation opportunities will be offered at the end of the service.

Religious Exploration:  Sunday morning programming is discontinued for the summer. We continue to meet for games nights Wednesdays at 7pm. We are exploring options for summer in-person gatherings. See This Month in RE for more.

Upcoming UFP Events

SMALL OUTDOOR "MEETUPS"

The Connections Team would like to host some small in-person UFP gatherings. Here are two options to start:
1) An outdoor drumming circle in the courtyard at UFP
2) Coffee and chatting in one of the local parks. (you would need to bring your own coffee and chair if possible)
Please respond to Kathy McLay at kthcmlay@gmail.com expressing your interest. We'll schedule the gatherings (weather dependent) when we know who wants to be a part. Of course, we will comply with the recommended COVID safety precautions, and will ask you to mask in addition to maintaining a 2 meter distance from each other.
It'll be fun! Waiting to hear from you!

PLANNING A UFP-SANCTIONED ACTIVITY?

Please consult the Covid Standards committee as you start your planning.
The up-to-date protocol is HERE.
The Covid Standards and Safe Reopening Committee would like to help those planning UFP activities to ensure provincial, local and UFP covid safety standards are part of the planning process. Any activity, event, or member gatherings that are planned to include any UFP members who would like to participate and that would usually be announced Sunday mornings or included in “The Flame” would be considered a UFP sanctioned activity. TRUNK SALE POSTPONED

We've determined that it's a little too early for our parking lot trunk sale. We're going to wait until Step 3 of re-opening, and will announce a new date soon. Do continue to collect items you'd like to recycle in a circular local economy!

SUMMER WORSHIP

We are joining together with four other congregations for our summer services. Each week, one of the congregations will host. What a great way for us to experience a diversity of styles and to make friends across southern Ontario! Each week we'll begin at 10:30am, and a time for conversation in small groups will follow.
Note that the link to join is different than our usual link. Information will be posted on our website and here in the Flame each week as usual.
There's now a place on our website for all the news that is the news about summer. If you're wondering what's going on, check it out HERE.

CONNECTING CIRCLES

Connecting Circles meet about twice monthly for an hour of sharing and mutual support. Some groups are continuing to meet over the summer.
If you want to be part of a circle, contact Rev. Julie.
