Dear Friends,

Council may be in recess, but the work -- and the risk of fires -- remains in motion. In our last newsletter, we announced the launch of our #ReadyCD4 Emergency Preparedness campaign and our staff’s LAFD Partnership Symposium on safety, preparedness, and communications protocols. We are so excited to continue this dialogue in our next CD4 Conversation on July 22nd at 5 PM, where we will be joined by LAFD leadership to review fire and emergency preparedness for all our constituents.

Featuring Deputy Chief & Commander Armando Hogan of LAFD’s West Bureau and Captain Bryan Nassour of LAFD’S Brush Clearance Unit, Councilmember Raman will lead a discussion on brush season and clearance, evacuation preparedness, and high fire severity zones. Chief Hogan and Captain Nassour will share critical information about emergencies, risks, and how to stay safe, and will open it up to questions from those in attendance. To register for the June 22nd Conversation, click HERE

One way you can make sure you’re #ReadyCD4 in advance of this Conversation is to sign up for the City’s emergency notification program, NotifyLA! When disasters occur, the City will alert you with specific instructions on what to do to stay safe. Sign up HERE to receive these alerts by phone, email, text message, or all of the above, or by texting READY to 888-777.

Be sure to let us know you’ve signed up for NotifyLA by adding the #ReadyCD4 hashtag on social media, or by emailing us at contactCD4@lacity.org!

Warmly,
Team CD4

SHARE YOUR INPUT ON EQUITABLE HOUSING

Los Angeles City Planning and the Housing & Community Investment Department (HCID) recently released an update on the Housing Element called “The Plan to House LA,” which aims to accommodate nearly 500,000 housing units over the next eight years.

A Housing Element examines a community’s housing needs and opportunities for all income levels, and analyzes strategies to meet this demand. Local governments in California are required to have a Housing Element as part of their adopted General Plan, a policy document created by each city that informs future decisions on how land can be utilized and built on that must be updated every 8 years.

LA Planning and HCID will be holding a webinar for the draft Housing Element Update and Safety Element Update to collect additional community input Tuesday, July 13, at 12 pm. We encourage constituents to take part as an opportunity to advocate for equitable housing! RSVP for the webinar HERE!

EXPLORING PATHS FOR SAFER STREETS

Last weekend, our team went biking in the Mid-City and Hancock Park areas with the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition to gain first hand experience of the realities facing cyclists in CD4.

With traffic collisions and fatalities happening in this city all too frequently, working to make streets safer for everyone is a top priority in CD4. In the coming months, our office will be connecting with partner organizations and constituents to facilitate additional community rides in other parts of District 4 as we work together to explore all viable options to improve street safety.

TRANSFORMING CITY SPACES

Last week, our Field Deputy Su organized graffiti abatement, clean-up, and fencing of an abandoned building in Wilshire Park, with the immense help of the Department of Building and Safety. Su and our City partners for helping to revitalize this corner of our district!

TREE RESTORATION IN LOS FELIZ

Councilmember Raman helped to break ground on the upper Vermont median leading into Griffith Park for tree restoration, made possible by the fundraising efforts and work of the Los Feliz Improvement Association in partnership with the Department of Recreation and Parks and LA Conservation Corps.

This project is a wonderful product of the City and the community working together, and we’re so happy to see the return of beautiful and much-needed trees to this historic median, evidenced by these photos dating back to 1914-1916!

CELEBRATING THE FOURTH IN SHERMAN OAKS

Councilmember Raman and our Field Deputy Alex brought their families along to celebrate the Fourth at the 32nd annual Sherman Oaks Fourth of July parade! Special thanks to Alan Taylor for organizing, and to veteran Jack Knight for his performance in honor of our veterans and LAFD heroes. We love being able to join these much-anticipated community events, and look forward to joining again next year.
