The Eucharist
...an on-going series
There are many names by which this amazing Sacrament is known – reflecting the inexhaustible richness of the Eucharist. The very name itself, Eucharist, is because it is an action of thanksgiving to God driving from eucharistein, the Greek word for “thanksgiving.” It is called the “Lord’s Supper” because of its connection to the Passover meal on the first Holy Thursday. The names are many: “breaking of the bread,” “memorial of the Lord’s Passion”, “Holy Sacrifice,” “Holy Communion,” the “Real Presence” and more. And so often we think of these terms in individualistic terms – and it is an intense, personal experience with the Risen Lord when one receives the Eucharist. But it is also communal, or as the Church often calls it: ecclesiological – that which describes the Church. Like the Church, the Eucharist in One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic. Read more...

Recent federal budget proposals call for the elimination of the Hyde Amendment which bars the use of federal funds to support abortion. The ban has been in place for 45 years. The US Catholic Bishops ask you to contact your congress member to ask them to save the Hyde Amendment. Contact them here.
