HFFI Action Alert

For the Fredericksburg City Council Meeting on July 13

HFFI has been working closely with the City and the Historic Preservation Working Group on updates to the Historic Preservation Plan and the Historic District Handbook/Design Guidelines.

The drafts are headed to City Council on July 13 for possible adoption.

HFFI's consultant, Dan Becker will make a 30 minute presentation for City Council’s consideration on the condition of the draft this Tuesday, July 13.

The Board is asking HFFI members to contact their Council representatives and ask them to:

  • Think about how they can best support their goal (Fredericksburg City Council's 2036 Vision Statement) to become “A Proven Leader in Historic Preservation"; and

  • Retain Mr. Becker to work with City staff and the Historic Preservation Working Group to further refine the current draft Historic Preservation Plan Update and the Historic District Handbook/Design Guidelines documents. The documents are shaping up but there are areas where Mr. Becker's expertise has shown a definite need for polish.

HFFI’s Board of Directors hired Dan Becker to give the City of FXBG and interested residents a holistic view of our local preservation program from an independent and impartial source. His insight and expertise can greatly enhance our policies in support of the City's ongoing efforts to ensure prompt, consistent, measurable, and equitable practices for its citizens, particularly those impacted by the historic district ordinance. Mr. Becker's review includes specific comments on the draft preservation plan and Historic District Handbook/Design Guidelines, but also poses thought-provoking questions and raises awareness of important issues meriting further discussion as City staff works to update and modernize various preservation-related policies and procedures.

HFFI's Board of Directors believes the City staff and Historic Preservation Working Group should work with Mr. Becker—a proven national leader in public policy, preservation, and urban planning—to refine our guiding documents and procedures. If you agree, we hope you will consider contacting your Council members. Let's assure FXBG's continued leadership in preservation and honor the contributions (past, present, and future) of all those who work to sustain the rich cultural heritage and authentic historic charm of this place we call home.
