Golf Course Review: Public Survey
The City of Toronto is reviewing its five golf course locations to better understand how to maximize golf and non-golf experiences. Existing golf course operations contracts have been extended through 2022 to allow time for staff to develop and recommend a comprehensive sourcing strategy for golf operations. A review of the existing model is necessary to ensure long-term financial sustainability, improved customer service, and a more positive user experience for people accessing the golf courses.  Many alternative uses have been proposed to enhance public access.

Whether you play golf or not, take the short survey to share your thoughts. The survey is open until July 12.

Women's Cycling Network - Call for Donations
Do you have a bike your family doesn’t need any more? Please consider donating it to The Women's Cycling Network.

The Women's Cycling Network is working with the Cycle Don Valley Midtown and Gateway Bicycle Hub to get bikes to newcomer women in Thorncliffe Park, Flemingdon Park, and close-by communities.  Many of the women are new to cycling, but are thrilled to benefit from increased physical activity and commuting options, plus the sheer joy of cycling. They are currently in need of bikes to provide to community members, especially in smaller sizes for 5’3” and under.

Improve Toronto Stormwater Charges and Fight Flooding
Recently Toronto has been hit with heavy rainfall and flooding across the city. This is a reminder of how urgent it is that we act on climate change, extreme weather and flooding and increase our collective climate resilience.

On July 14-15 Council will have a chance to support a critical tool to help reduce flooding and make polluters pay for the stormwater they produce. Contact the Mayor and your local Councillor today and urge them to support a fair stormwater charge.
  • Read about the dangers of excess runoff and flooding in this Star article. *The article also includes a number of steps that individual homeowners can take to protect their properties right now.*
  • Read why the changes to storm-water charges are critical to Toronto's flooding strategy in this CBC article.
  • You can contact the Mayor, the Chair of the Infrastructure and Environment Committee, and your local Councillor to ask that they support a fair stormwater charge, using Toronto Environmental Alliance's form letter.

Sign the Petition to Stop Excessive Construction Noise Hours
As many of HV’s residents unfortunately know, at the beginning of the pandemic the Province meddled with the City of Toronto Act to change permitted hours of residential construction from 7:00am - 7:00pm Monday to Friday, 9:00am - 7:00pm on Saturdays and not at all on Sundays, to 6:00am to 10:00pm every day of the week. The resulting unmitigated noise has caused suffering throughout our community.

In response, Councillors Matlow and Wong-Tam have developed a petition to the provincial government. Please click here to sign the petition and demand the province take action and revert construction hours back to their original times.

The NetZero survey: a sneak peak at the early results
A few weeks ago, HVRA invited residents to complete our NetZero Survey which will help shape our greenhouse gas reducing Home Retrofit and Electric Vehicle projects. Early results from the 317 surveys completed to date reveal some interesting patterns:
  • 71% of homeowners are interested in thermal imaging of their home
  • 44% of homeowners are most interested in solar electricity among all retrofitting options
  • 50% of e-bike owners in HV use them 2 to 3 times per week
  • the favourite choice of pizza prize winners: The Annex (mozzarella, mascarpone, goat cheese ... yum)
If you haven’t yet filled out the 10-minute survey, now is a great time to do so. Not only will you help us reach our target of 500 completed surveys, but you’ll get a chance to win a free pizza from Victory Cafe on Bloor St. If you have completed the survey, you can still help by encouraging your neighbours to do so.  Thanks for your participation!

Central Tech Cleans Up
The wonderful planter boxes on the south and southwest side of Central Tech were left in bad condition after a long construction project to rebuild the south-side staircase. Teacher and HV Gardener Susan Purvis worked a miracle by asking the construction company to remove the huge metal storage bin blocking the west-side boxes of Liberation tulips and other beauties. To her delight, the bin disappeared overnight!

CT Principal Lisa Edwards is now pressing the construction company to re-sod the area east of the new staircase, a sad sight in comparison to the bright pollinator-friendly flowers growing in the south-side boxes. We look forward to thanking Principal Edwards once the bare soil has been replaced by grass.

Our "squeaky wheel" Susan Purvis gets the bins removed!

Editor's note: Our next eblast will be arriving at the end of July as we enjoy a bit of a summer break.
